Mick Jagger "Secrets" Video
Posted by: punkfloyd ()

Not sure I remember this one airing on MTV. I know Just Another Night, Lucky in Love and Hard Woman (2 versions!) did. Maybe this is pulled from the Running Out of Luck longform video?

I don't hear any acoustic guitar. I think they filmed this on the same stage as the moon landing and Super Bowl XXXII.

...can Mick...or anyone for that matter....watch that and not cringe?

This song makes Dirty Work sound good.

If I really want to cringe, I'll listen to "Eileen, let me lean on you..."

That made some stuff like this sound good.

Re: Mick Jagger "Secrets" Video

In fairness, Secrets is not the worst track on She's The Boss. A good pop tune with a fine melody, actual guitars and a minumum of awful synths and artificial percussive elements. Not bad at all, imo

I LOVE EVERYTHING KEITH HAS DONE BUT "EILEEN" IS POSITIVELY HORRID.

Eileen is great! Great playing, catchy hooks.

Yeah Eileen is not bad at all, actually I for one prefer MO to TIS, apparently it didn't sell as well though, some even say it "bombed"? Life's not fair...

As for "Secrets", I remember reading good reviews about when it came out although I never really warmed up to it, it always sounded a bit non-descript to me. It would certainly have worked a lot better without the synths and that pseudo hard-rock guitar, a bit lke "Winning Ugly" I guess.

Yeah and how come Jagger prancing down the cellblock like that is lasting loner than 10 seconds w/o that acoustic shoved up his backdoor?

I ended up not minding parts of "Shes the Boss" too much. Like Secrets" and "Turn the Girl loose"; or "Hard Woman". One of my problems with the whole album is the oversinging. He comes off trying way too hard. Other problem is those Synclavier and Fairlight sounds all throughout.
Apart from the title track and the "Luck" and "Loaf" song the writing is not that bad.

When people say they're "not minding parts" of an album as a positive remark, I guess it's pretty safe to say it's a dud! smiling smiley

She's The Boss was not a downright bad album, but the production was, imo.

Songs like Lonely At The Top, Hard Woman, Just Another Night and Secrets were quite good. I also like 1/2 A Loaf.

I remember enjoying the movie...MJ was quite self-deprecating.

Nothing intentionally funny about the 80s.

Mullets, casio keyboards and embarrassing pop videos.

Just why did everyone push their jacket sleeves up to their elbows?

Mental.

The problem with Mick is that he thought as a solo artist he could be like Michael Jackson or David Bowie.

Didn't work.

Not by a long long way.

Mental.

Hot wrists?

....yet interestingly, cold foreheads and ankles (hence headbands and leg warmers).

Maybe the 80s had a viral issue?

I actually quite like the She's The Boss album. The production is pretty bad for sure, but the songwriting is actually quite good, and I like most of Jagger's singing on the album.

I remember the video, but I think I must have changed the channel evertime it came on MTV...it was too embarrassing...and still is. You know how sometimes you look back at something and think, 'That wasn't so bad...'
Well, this is even worse now.

I disagree - Nile Rodgers did better with Bowie and others...and he was a master at finding a groove.
I think the generic melodies, weak, mannered vocals and horrible lyrics are the culprit. This was a very bad time for Jagger as an artist...
He seemed to lack any real artistic ambition other than proving that he could still compete with Prince, MJ and Bowie.

Great track. Great album. By "great" I mean Undercover Voodoo Lounge type
"great", not Beggars Exile type "beyond great".

Kind of amazing when you think about it. In 1981-82 the stones were the biggest thing in the world. Massive tour, massive album, massive single.

Then, 82-83 comes around, and you get Prince (1999), Michael Jackson (Thriller) and the resurgence of David Bowie (Let's Dance) and all of a sudden the whole musical landscape has changed.

Duran Duran, The Police (Synchronicity), Culture Club, Madonna, Cindy Lauper, seems like hundreds of new acts...and the world is TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

Stones come out with a great album, Undercover, that is largely unnoticed...too much new stuff going on.

Mick gets distracted, poor sales of Undercover provide no motivation to continue in that direction so he gets itchy feet.

It's very easy to see why he decided to go solo at that point.

He just did such a colossally pure job of it was the problem.
