I agree. Celebration Day is incredible. I watched it for the third time last night on the home theater cranked. AMAZING! Really, some of the versions on that DVD see like Zep have been secretly playing together for the past 20 years. Really, the version of Trampled Underfoot is smoking live Zep at its best. Improve, heavy riffing, great sloppy leads, and Plant wailing like he is 20 years old. Amazing. Great version of No Quarter, and even the war horses pack a punch. Whole Lotta Love is astounding.

I completely agree; it's a bloody FANTASTIC concert film, and Zep is really BRINGING the goods here!

Celebration Day made me finally go out and get a Blu Ray player. I first saw it in the theater. Concert films (or tapes) don't get much better.

They really don't man. AWESOME film!!!

I am fine with Jack Black honoring them that way, everybody knows this kind of ranking is a subjective matter anyway.

Personally speaking, most of Zep's material except for the mighty Whole Lotta Love is not exactly to my taste, I sometimes even refer to it as 'white trash'

Are you implying it's their vulgarity that ensured them a major success in the US?

Imho "Achille's..." is not white trash at all...

Well, considering the huge success of hairdressers' faves like Aerosmith, Mötley Crue and Van Halen in the U.S. market, I won't argue with that...

Zep was cashing in big time. They won the west.

2007 Led Zep vs 2007 Stones - Led Zep level of performance, musically speaking, was far better than the Stones. IMO, of course.

Zep was able to concentrate all their fire power on a single performance.
The Stones playing several shows had to concentrate on renewing Chuck's interest repeatedly...so its really unfair to compare...

That is most definitely true.

But a 2007/modern-day Led Zeppelin can easily go up against various other modern-day Rolling Stones performances with no issue whatsoever:

St. Louis 1997
MSG 2003
Olympia 2003
Saitama 2006

It's easy to do one show and put a lot of energy into it. It's much harder to tour from the end of 2005 to 2007 and still have a lot of energy at the end of the tour.

is it really easy to do just one show and get it perfect in every sense? Doubt it. Zeppelin should be commended for Celebration Day. It is an unbelievably good concert perfectly captured. I also happen to believe it is the template for the recent, stripped down Stones shows, tho they would never admit it.

Love Led Zep.

Saw Celebration day at the cinema. My first reaction was: it doesn't exactly sound like the boot I had been listening for 5 years. Not even close. It's as if they added a massive dose of viagra to the music.

All in all a great performance. I loved Bonham jr. I loved the fact that they asked Bonham jr to play the drums. Moving.

Plant worse than expected. Always a huge charisma, but his performance was in line with Jagger's at the Beacon, so to say.

Page and JPJ way better than expected.

Set list, a bomb.

Tempting to believe that but I don't see an actual connection.

LZ has always been 4 people on stage. No more, no less. So they were always "stripped down."

The Stones have had many configurations in the past, these 2012 may have been their most simplest presentation since the early 70's, yes....but to think that they were "inspired" by LZ's 2007 show is reaching a bit. Keith said that it was Charlie himself that wanted to do the stripped down thing. I doubt Charlie is keeping his radar on what LZ is up to, to make such suggestions.

Plus, "Celebration Day" was released on November 19th...much, much later than the Stones began their rehearsals for the mini tour. I doubt someone bought the DVD set and said "Hey, guys, look at this! Zeppelin is kicking ass right here...no backup guys, no help--just the band. Whaddya think, we should do this too!"

Pretty silly imo to think a band that has been around as long as The Stones uses a template from a band that has played less than a handful of times since 1980.

I recall seeing an interview with Steven Tyler a few years ago when he was asked where Aerosmith ranks. He said below the Stones but above Zeppelin!

Are you sure? The Aerosmith guys have been Zep worshippers forever. Steven was quite humble in his autobiography about his (failed) audition to be the singer in a touring band w/ Page and JPJ. Tyler said no matter what, it was a privilege and an honor to play with those guys for an afternoon. I'm paraphrasing.

...not only that, but Zep allowed Tyler to introduce and sing with them at the hall of fame induction.

That's what Tyler said! I remember laughing and telling my brother about it! I think it was around the time a couple years ago I saw them in Vancouver on their last show of the tour they did with Joan Jett.
I'm sure all the Aerosmith guys are big Zep fans but that doesn't mean Tyler can't think his band is better! I like Aerosmith alot but I would place them several notches below Zep.

jimi hendrix- total albums sales to date-22.5 million

bon jovi- total album sales to date-34 million

record sales are a really poor indicator of quality.you may as well be trying to tell me mcdonalds produce better meals than gordon ramsays steakhouse because they sell more food.

the difference here is bon jovi has at least twice as many albums as hendrix so its easy to outsell hendrix. the stones have at least twice as many albums as led zeppelin yet 50 million less sales

i dont know what i find more disturbing, your logic or the fact that you know how many albums bon jovi have released.

i could also use the britney spears/the who comarison but i'm afraid of where it may lead.

Not only that, but Tyler went to London after the O2 gig, when Page, Jones, and Bohnem wanted to tour and Plant didn't. Tyler auditioned and rehearsed with them...and by all accounts it was a shambles. And he was quickly dropped from consideration.

Led Zeppelin were an incredible band, period. Were they better than the Stones? The Beatles? The Floyd? Who knows, but they did nothing but kick ass all over the world for 12 years and then their legacy has kicked ass for the 33 years thereafter.

Presence has always been (IMHO) their finest moment with Achilles Last Stand and Hots on for Nowhere being among their finest hours, but there are no bad records and no weak monents. Be it the "blooze" of 1969 or the ripping-guitar of In My Time of Dying from 75 or even the BEST of Page's blues guitar solos from 1979's I'm Gonna Crawl, these are all great trax.

Bash all you want, but each of us would run over someone's grandmomma to see Led Zep live.......

the Hendrix vs. Bon Jovi battle is almost as exciting as the Beatles vs. Stones fight that thewatchman/bunch of other names is always foaming at the mouth about.
