Charlie's timing

Street Fighting man in this video: @ 43.16

I love, love, love it....

This isn't the version on GYYYO is it?

He's looser and more behind Keith?

He didn't do this in later years did he?

This is one hot band.

Also.... I much prefere Charlie's sound as well to later years, it's not as hard.. did he use tighter skins later? Too much snap.. maybe it's the way it's all miked.

Is it me or is he playing it straighter here?

It's not the same.

Yep, Keith is absolutely terrific here...this is what rock'n'roll is all about...

Charlie's delaying his snare a fraction longer in some parts and doing a shuffle thing on the foot pedal?

Is that the difference?

It's amazing.

God this is so great.

If you're a drummer and have a rhythm-guitar like Keith 1970 it's just to follow...Ringo would also have done it...(eehh maybe not...grinning smiley)

Maybe Charlie wasn't drumming like a robot in 1969...

I often listen to Gimme Shelter (the movie) with my headphones and especially Jumping Jack Flash is so powerful and has got an enormous 'drive' (thank you Charlie)...

We discussed this before by the way...is it groove, swing, etc...?

I never understood what the definition of swing was.

It's when no one is on the beat like the metronome?

Great recording drummers like C.W. play around the click. Purposely a touch ahead or behind it during different sections to maintain a swing and a human feel to the tracks. It's not easy to do. i doubt Charlie played much to click in the early days. Songs like HTW and TD (Jimmy Miller plays drums too) speed up allot in the outro.. Considering that the new songs are from demos Charlie has to be playing with some kind of tempo reference I believe. I don't hear click in the SFTD documentary either. The Beatles used it, you can hear actual metronome in the mix for Blackbird and Here Comes The Sun. These videos are great, Watts is the greatest of all English drummers and that's a serious group, Moon, Bonham, Starr, Baker... Watts is the man. IMO

IMO I'd choose SFM for Mick Taylor in 2013.

I agree, Mick used to be superb on this.

The Brussels version that turns into a faster and faster raga / train crash is great.. and so is Charlie on that.

One of their finest moments.

I thought this thread was about when he joined the band.

On that note, I'd say his timing was perfect!

IMHO
Tempo is slower on the second one.
Tempos can dictate the kind of rhythm that should be used,
second video is staigther, no double bass drum kicks
He's not playing a shuffle on the bass, listen to Hooche Coochie, that's a shuffle.
Being on the beat makes songs sound stiff to me.
They need to beathe a little.

Y'all remember that rubber legged boy

Yes, just in time for the 50th anniversary. If Charlie had joined later, we wouldn't have had the 50th anniversary shows, just endless speculation threads on when they might be playing next, if ever....

I've watched Charlie constantly over the years. He has had to adjust his playing over the years, but in particular since 1981, when the Stones basically became a three ring circus - Mick on one ramp, Keith 75 feet away on the other, and Ronnie not exactly "locked in" no matter where he was on stage. The introduction of horns and backing vocalists just added to the difficulties. And don't get me started on the B-stage, where you deal with delayed sound from the main stage speakers and echo from a large domed venue - it would be impossible for anyone else.

His playing is a deliberate response to the needs of the band - he's amazing.

Charlie is playing straight here.

No time to swing... not surprising - it's a million miles an hour from the start, and then speeds up.

This is magnificent in a totally different way - MT is outstanding and Charlie even though it's straight is still brilliant.

Shivers.
