OT : What are your favourite albums of 2012?
Posted by: kowalski ()
Date: December 15, 2012 16:34

Please post your favourite albums of 2012, always a fun way to discover new music smiling smiley

My personal top 3 in rock albums :

1/ Ty Segall Band "Slaughterhouse" (In The Red) - most straightforward rock n roll I've heard in years

2/ Neil Young & Crazy Horse "Psychedelic Pill" (Reprise) - beyond expectations reunion album

3/ Wicked Lady "Psychotic Overkill" (originally recorded in 1972 / new edition in 2012 by Guerssen, a Spanish label)- unearthed classic from the 70's

And as "unclassifiable" : Bob Dylan "Tempest" (Columbia) - I easily put this one at the same level of his 70's classic albums.

I didn't really buy a lot of new stuff in 2012...liked the Jack White release.

Sadly, Starbucks is now my source for 'new music'. Picked up a Ramones compilation which is great...how could it not be?

Rod Stewart Christmas Album (I know, I shouldn't be encouraging his behaviour, but it was a weak moment over a ginger bread latte)

The Beatles Stereo Box set in Vinyl.

All technically 'new' but as you can see, not much actually new. I must have bought close to a 100 used albums (most pristine condition) at vinyl fairs from every genre of music imaginable. That has to be the most fun. Even if you pick up a dud, it's a buck so who cares?!

Okay, here's mine, in no particular order:

Redd Kross-Researching the Blues

Ian Hunter-When I'm President

Nomads-Solna

Young Fresh Fellows-Tiempo de Lujo

Andy Shernoff-Don't Fade Away E.P. (outstanding return from Dictators mastermind)

Neil Young and Crazy Horse-Psychedelic Pill

Polly-All Messed Up (great glam rock from Vancouver)

Jim Jones Revue-The Savage Heart

And, while I would never presume to choose our own bands' album as a favourite, I am pretty pleased with the way this turned out:

BUDOKAN-Spin A Little Gold

Alabama Shakes has released an excellent debut album. Far from perfect but sounding very fresh. I like their sound too. Very crisp but a bit retro at the same time. Best on vinyl of course...

TEMPEST on so many peeps lists??? Seriously?

I have all Dylan's records - LOVE the guy, but Tempest is just such a letdown for me.

If Tempest is on so many lists I DO think that's more a reflection on the quality of the rest of the released product.

IMHO.

TheRubens - Aussie band new album good
ZZ Top's futura album good
Bruce's Wrecking ball REALLY good

But not much else I am afraid

Dylan's Tempest has at least two things that many new records lack nowadays : songs and musicality (like in melodic quality). That's what I like about this album actually : music flows naturally like on any other great Dylan record. The only minor flaw is maybe the last two songs that don't quite fit the rest. Maybe at least Roll On John should have been left off or kept for a future release.

Agree on Tempest. The 'blues with new lyrics'-routine doesn't cut it anymore.

My favourites:
chris robinson brotherhood- big moon ritual/magic door
alabama shakes - boys & girls

I've been listening to James Brown & JB recordings for most of the year. The new RJ Smith bio on Soul Brother Nr. 1 is highly recommended by the way!

Well, I have to say it's probably his weakest effort since World Gone Wrong (which I liked), but Bobs mediocre albums are mostly still a lot better than the competition.
