Ally Bain on The Worst.

Wasn't that Frankie Gavin? Though Aly Bain would have been a great choice. Also Byron Berline on Country Honk. Stones-with-a-fiddler sounds good.

Ric Grech on Factory Girl

Tami Lynn, Dr. John, Clydie King, Vanetta Field, Shirley Goodman and Joe Green on Let it Loose. Amazing how they add the gospel grit and authenticity to that beaut of a song.

Bobby Keys on Casino Boogie, hell, every Stones song he plays on!

Mea culpa on Ally Bain, when it should have been Frankie Gavin. I think both played with De Dannan. Throw in Dolores Kean and you'd get a full set.

Prior to that, the Stones deployed Phil Beer on Blinded By Love; he's a former Fairport Convention fiddler, but I don't like Blinded By Love.

I do like Flaco Jiminez's contribution to Sweetheart's Together. I think Keith does listen to Arhoolie box sets, and to Ry Cooder's solo material, hence the use of Jiminez.

Can we also throw in Buckwheat Zydeco's contribution to Keith's solo You Don't Move Me, and Michel Doucet, of Beausoleil, who ably assisted on Locked Away. Or maybe I'm being too broad here.

Phil Spector and Jack Nitzsche on Play With Fire, sometime in the small hours when everyone but Mick and Keith had gone home.

I love Billy Preston's organ solo on "I Got the Blues."

Yes indeed - takes the tune to another level.
Same with Sonny Rollin's sax solo on Waiting on a Friend
Also, Wayne Perkins guitar solo on Hand of Fate, and Harvey Mandel on Hot Stuff - an amazing solo.

So many others that have already been mentioned - Nicky Hopkins, Bobby Keys, etc.

Looking forward to what Clapton plays on the new album, if there will ever be a new album!

Nicky's discography. Whoop there it is. Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Who, Zappa, Dusty, Ella Fitzgerald and others...many others...not just overdubs with The Stones,
but an essential rhythm member as they worked things up in (arguably) their very best recordings when they were still very much a working recording band with expanding vision and passion.
His rhythm is as stunning as his really wonderful, just amazing melodic sense. He was a miracle of sensitivity and intuition, and choperoonies.

Give just a quick look at his discography please, it's like a roller coaster ride:

His bio from same site:

Players you all mentioned + Sonny Rollins on "Neighbors"

A song I overlooked for years simply because I loved everything on the album, as time has gone by that song really got down deep in me

Any piano and organ playing Nicky Hopkins ever contributed

Re: Best contributions to Stones recordings by other musicians

can't argue with Nicky and Bobby's contributions all through history. Add Jim Price in the hey-day, and Preston - ONLY in studio; not live.

Add Buckmaster's strings on "Sticky Fingers". Ry Cooder's slide on "Memo from Turner".
And surely Sly's percussion all over "Undercover" album.

Sonny Rollins is one of the Jazz Greats, but I am not wild about his additions to
"Waiting on Friend", "Slave" and "Neighbors".

Honorable mentions (although they weren't actually on the Stones recordings):
Chuck Berry for his songwriting and "inspiration" of Keith
and
Johnnie Johnson for his "inspiration of both Keith & Stu

Peace,

I am a Jack Nitzsche'fan. He made so many contributions to The Stones. He is the most neglected contributor in my book. Plus I believe he would show The Stones around town when they were recording in in LA.
He played harpsichord on a few Stones tunes and lots more piano.

Would be curious to know of any playing on any of the Stones recordings that folks find particularly memorable which was not performed by a member of the Stones but by a session musician etc.

Perhaps Merry Clayton's singing on "Gimme Shelter"?
Nicky Hopkins piano on "Sympathy For The Devil"?
Sugar Blue's harmonica on "Miss You"?
Paul Buckmeister's string arrangement on "Moonlight Mile"?
Jack Nitzsche's arrangement on "You Can't Always Get What You Want"?
Billy Preston?
Sonny Rollins?
Ernie Watts?
Stu?
Jimmy Miller?
Ian MacLagen?
Jim Price?
Bobby Keys?
Anyone else I've missed?

A little surprised that fur didn't fly over the suggestion that Stu wasn't a Stone. Maybe Keith hasn't read this yet. smiling smiley

My fav? Can't live without Buddy on Champagne and Reefer!
