I mean, name one band without any influence by Chuck Berry? Without these guys, we had never seen Elvis, Stones and Beatles.

I can't believe more people didn't say Nirvana
They actually did change the face of rock music (American anyway) almost overnite.
All the glam-metal stopped dead.
Michael Jackson knocked off the chart.
Then it was the Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, STP for awhile
Even Guns n Roses changed a few things

Nirvana didn´t do anything new. They killed all the glam metal and the fun in Rock and Roll and made it all very depressive, dark and boring. It was just pure depressive shit. I am glad Kurt killed himself. Nirvana sucks big time!

I think Nirvana is a great band, with 2 great studio albums (not Bleach) & a classic live one (unplugged) - they certainly influenced rock in that they had more depth, passion, rawness (emotional/musical), & resonated w/ people used to seeing the 80s-early 90s rock n roll as pure entertainment or glamour - a needed pendulum swing. Of course they influenced a lot of garbage, & like punk were soon co-opted by the industry (like expensive pre-ripped clothing). G n R wer more of a transitional group, part rockstar-ism, but more raw & unpredictable than warrant, winger, etc...

The real talent (controlled talent anyway) in the band was Dave Grohl

1. The Beatles. (Guitar bands can sell records)
2. The Stones. (Everything comes from the blues/the dangerous attitude)
3. Cream/Led Zep. (Birth of heavy rock and guitar/rock gods)
4. Pink Floyd. (Psychedelia/Symphonic rock: rock can be extremely complicated)
5. Sex Pistols. (Forget about complicated chord changes: everything is in the attitude)

I'm looking for the change point, not always music:

a) Beatles - song writing and recording technology
b) Dylan with The Band - one of the biggest shifts in rock direction, you can line all the grung, punk, heavy metal, acid rock, et. up behind this event.
c) Stones - big venue stage/sound technology, sex drugs and R&R
d) Greatfull Dead - for hiring the Angels ultimatley killing the very hippie movement they so enjoyed and opening up the world to my next pick.
e) Alice Cooper - I believe he was the first hippie hating rock star who started the rock spectical concept, if he was not the first please substitute whom ever it was.

ROLLING STONES, BEATLES, WHO, LED ZEPPELIN, JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE Elvis is not a band, nor is Michael Jackson: the Doors may be #6 and The Yardbirds, Kinks, Derek and the Dominoes all need to be considered.

My top 5 are as follows: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Aerosmith. Secondary list: The Doors, The Yardbirds, Derek and the Dominoes, (Elvis and Michael Jackson are NOT bands) Cream and Santana.

I'm surprised it took so long to have Sabbath mentioned, really the first Heavy Metal Band.
