Gloom & Doom Sux as Bad as Jagger's Faux-Socialist Rhetoric.

Good thing you really are not a capitalist, Sir Mick. I mean really, free enterprise is a greater evil than government dominating every aspect of society. I look forward to the keys to the Villa, Chateau and $10 concert tix. Oh wait, you mean that's not how it works? Gee, I was mislead.

paulm, may I respectfully comment that I find this thread and your post immature to say the least.

Even though I am no fan of this track, I think to attack Jagger from an ideological position misses the point. I don't think he has any particular political message - he's certainly no socialist, faux or otherwise. I do think that he has a basic sympathy for the underdog in society. I believe this comes from a basic sense of fairness oand decency that he has that is genuine. That doesn't mean I think these song lyrics are any good though, and it has nothing to do with what they express. They're just kind of lazy.

Mick and Keith are big Merle Haggard fans. I'd like to see them cover Haggard's Okie From Muskogee. I'd like to hear Mick sing those lyrics.smiling smiley

Well, there are no socialist rhetorics in this song (or any Rolling Stones song, really). To be anti-government isn't the same as being a socialist. On the contrary, most socialists are pro-government. Mike is, together with almost every world citizen, critical against the Iraqi war. Which he has every right to without being called a socialist. Seems like many citizens across the big pond have a very vague perception of what socialism is.

Peace = Socialism?

Not approving making money on war = socialism?

I don't get paulm's rhetoric here.

Please elaborate.

Capitalism = rule by a corporate oligarchy.

Socialism = rule by a political oligarchy.

"The People" are stuffed under both systems.

In both cases the oligarchy will be the same people.

Sociopaths make the best oligarchs.

At least the lyrics aren't the usual putting women down rubbish.

Faux-socialist rhetoric ....Paul that's just utter pants on your part. Put the gun down and go do some charitable work.

Not knowing me ash, you wouldn't know that I do charitable work.

Munich, you're right, I'll give it a rest. I'm caught up in US politics, and Jagger's fund raiser attendance, combined with his socio-political lyrics is so hypocritical in light of his true capitalist nature, which he should take pride in publically, or lyrically. I for one would applaud the honesty, and I'm in no way a one-percenter. I guess it's the hypocrisy that gets me.

I just thought that rather than getting worked up about some aging pop star's crap lyrics maybe you should go do something to make yourself feel good and effect change in your community. If you already do charitable work than good on you i genuinely applaud you. I work with profoundly disabled kids and young adults for a uk charity. More people should. It's socialism in action !!
I just don't understand why socialist seems to be used as a cuss word in some places not that i'm marxist, socialist, communist, fascist, tea party or whatever. If the US wants to win the soccer world cup they're gonna need someone on the left wing.
However you're probably right that jagger should be singing about the sunshine in Mustique although that might turn the stones into the beach boys. Now that's an idea.
anyway i've gotta go. if i stay on one message board too long it could affect my tax position.

How 'bout some lyrics about million dollar deals, ripping off the punters or naked pin-ups?

Oops! That's Mötley Crüe and Van Halen grinning smiley

I'm really surprised that people actually believe that there need to be a conflict between social engagement and making money eye popping smiley

Not sure where you're finding any socialism in the Doom and Gloom lyrics. And I certainly have no idea where anyone is finding any socialism in mainstream US politics!

PaulM's point is a valid one. I can only assume Mick's chastising the rich fellow "for locking the door and putting his feet up on the couch" will translate into $35 tickets for the upcoming shows.

No, it's not valid. It's perfectly possible being concerned of how the world develops and making money on your profession at the same time.
