I had heard that Mick wrote Shine a Light after Billy Preston had taken him to hear a Gospel church choir, but did not know they sang on Exile.

Really great to see the breadth of musical knowledge here on IORR.

Yes, but Shine A Light was recorded first by Leon Russell as Get A Line On You.

Tom, are you saying that my statement above is not correct? Mick wrote SAL before Billy took him to Gospel churches? I listened to Leon's version on Youtube...on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a -5.

Not necessarily - I know that Shine A Light's lyrics were, embryonically, composed circa 1968 when Mick was seeing the destructive path that Brian Jones was pursuing.

In March 1969, Keith played bass on Billy Preston's first Apple album, That's The Way God Planned It, which was recorded in the UK. Billy was in Britain a great deal during 1969: sessions with the Beatles for Get Back, and also Abbey Road. A second album, released in 1970, Encouraging Words, was also commenced in 1969. Billy also worked on Doris Troy's Apple album, again recorded in the UK.

Leon Russell recorded his first solo album later in 1969, but Shine A Light, thankfully, was left off of it. You are right, in that it is a dire version.

Some songs were done in Los Angeles where Jagger was attending a local church.
The choir on Shine A Light is from that church I believe...

Oh my. Was he attending church to look for singers? He doesn't seem like a spiritual person.

Specialty Records "Greatest Gospel Gems" is a good collection for those who want to test the waters (before the full baptism in the rivers of righteousness,y'all!)

Lots of greats on that one: Blind Boys of Alabama, Sam Cooke, Swan Silvertones and others.

That sounds great. The Babylon box set looks even better but maybe a bit extensive, since, y'know, I ain't baptized yet.

and you've got

I always very much liked songs with gospel influence in rock music like from the Stones: Shine a light, Let it loose, Just wanne see his face, Salt of the earth, I got the blues, etc.
Dylan, Stones and many others . . a lot of good stuff there . .

Thought some of you would enjoy this.

"Work, play, pray – the lifecycle of the rural America that created our greatest generation of country music, 1923 to 1936. These volumes survey songs of labor and occupation, hardship and loss; dance tunes, comic numbers, and novelties that provided distraction and fun; and the hymns and sacred pieces that reached beyond the raw material of daily existence for something enduring. Work Hard, Play Hard, Pray Hard features 19 previously un-reissued sides and is largely drawn from the collection of the late Don Wahle of Louisville, Kentucky. A hillbilly 78 collector for many years, his records were hours away from the dump when producer Nathan Salsburg recovered them. Compiled and annotated by Salsburg with accompanying essays by Sarah Bryan(editor of the Old Time Herald), Amanda Petrusich (New York Times; author of It Still Moves), and John Jeremiah Sullivan(Southern editor of the Paris Review; author of Blood Horses and the essay collection Pulphead)."

Here's a link to an article that explains how the collection was put together...
[pitchfork.com]

and here's one of the songs featured on the set, by The Dixon Brothers.
