GRRRRR - Boys - Ya let us down!

Not that I didn't expect it, but now that the track listing for the new greatest hits compilation is out, I have to say that this is about the biggest let-down I've felt about my favorite band since 1964. It's not unusual for a Stones compilation to be primariliy singles but I really hoped they would rise above that this time. I mean is this the best compilation they can give us to mark their 50TH FREAKING ANNIVERSARY? OK - at least they threw in some unexpected album cuts, but it's basically 40 Licks Plus. And to add to the 40 Licks tracks with cuts like Streets of Love or Don't Stop? To mark 50 years, they should've dispensed with the "mostly singles" format and given us an anthology of their best work, be they hits or not. Oh well, thank God we all have all their albums and most of us have iPods or Mp3 players. I think I'll formulate my own celebration of their legacy. And it will have Happy on it.

Well....I should've clarified that I meant biggest let down in terms of "Greatest Hits" collections. Yeah, there have been other types of let downs but that's another issue.

stonesdan60, which songs would you have put on it then? Give us a tracklist. 80 songs.

Ahh...You put me to the test. I'll work on it...But I definitely would've not included Fool To Cry, Emotional Rescue, Streets of Love, Don't Stop.....

The more I think about it, the more I don't really care about the new releases.

I thought ABB was pretty good but frankly, I haven't really enjoyed their sound since Steel Wheels. The way I see it, if they put out some blues then I would get excited but new rocker/ballads......eh...Sound wise and song wise, they been doing the same thing since Steel Wheels. I guess you could say that for their entire career but really..

One could package up Steel Wheels, Voodoo, Bridges, and ABB and it would all pretty much interchangable.

Just like the "Jimmy Miller" set although they were on fire creatively at that time.

I love the fact that pre 1983 stuff keeps getting released. I've been wearing out The Checkerboard set and Brussells.

I guess I'm happy living with ghosts of Stones past.

Well, Fool to cry and E. Rescue were both the official singles of their albums.
You could argue about 2-3 songs in all but with just 2 CD's and all their material there are not that many alternatives as it is still a big hit compilation.
I can't see a big let down here. It is what it is and we don't have to buy it (again). It's more for the casual buyer/fan.

These songs are obviously the ones THEY regard as their finest works and as an overview of their carrer.

There will always be fans who are unsatisfied no matter what. Make your own compilations then.

New fans will be surprised to find songs like Can't You Hear Me Knocking on the regular albums they will purchase after this compilation. I can live with that

Cant say I agree.

There's no other career-spanning Stones retrospective release on the market.

This one covers all their best known songs and at 50 or 80 songs provides a broad overview of their career, with (for the first time) every studio album of their career represented.

A compilation is never aimed at the hardcore fan who has everything and its unreasonable to expect it to be.

Take into account though that because of the complexities regarding the publishing rights regarding their back catalogue, all the version of this release - as was the case with 40 Licks - has to be split exactly 50/50 between ABKCO and UMG-era material. Which, as they were only on ABKCO for less than a fifth of their career means that the 60s albums will be over represented compared to the post-1970 albums. So, they're left with the task of condensing the last 40 years into 25 or 40 songs. Not easy.

That 60s era is the one where the Stones' legacy will last the longest as its when their musical and cultural impact was at it's peak. If anything, having a few deep album tracks from the mid 60s might make more hardcore fans appreciate that era more, because if you read Stones message boards you could be forgiven for thinking that the band's career only began when they released 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'.

("Happy" is on the 3-CD version. Its the only song on that version that isnt on the 4-CD edition, which is most odd)

Why "obviously" ?
I've no reason to think that the include the songs THEY think are their finest
Could just as well be the record company. If it was the band that picked out the songs, one would think that some more "obscure" songs would be included.

I really doubt Rolling Stones pay any attention to their live albums or their compilations at all, during the last 20 years. The edits on Live Licks, for instance, makes it obvious.

Jump Back and 40 licks were compiled by Jagger and Richards. I have reason to expect the same with this compilation. As far as I know, no compilation has ever been released without at least Jaggers involvement. And in According To The Rolling Stones book, Ronnie said that Jagger promised him Dance pt.1 would be included on the next compilation. He kept his word...

The question is why should fans buy it if they have all the songs. In this case certainly not because of the cover, I will probably try to get the new ones, but I have the rest already.

As far as I know, no compilation has ever been released without at least Jaggers involvement. And in According To The Rolling Stones book, Ronnie said that Jagger promised him Dance pt.1 would be included on the next compilation. He kept his word...

40 Licks was compiled with two noticeable themes in mind - neither of which was concerned with musical quality or being an accurate overview of the band's career.

a) a representation of the band's singles, with the biggest hits from each album represented (plus a few better known early album cuts)

b) to maximise the number of Jagger-Richards songs (and therefore include as few cover versions as possible) in order to provide them with more royalties.

Accordingly, the only album whose lead single wasn't included was 'Dirty Work' (because the lead single - uniquely for the Stones - was a cover version) and they managed to omit a number 1 hit single which is one of the most significant releases of their career in that it is still the only ever straight blues song to be a chart topper ('Little Red Rooster')

The 'without Jagger's involvement' bit may be true to a degree, but thats a very broad statement which could potentially range from being involved at every stage of the album's concept and marketing down to merely seeing the track listing and artwork and saying "OK...that'll do".

I seriously doubt that any of the band had any significant input into 'Rarities' for example, and as Erik points out, its quite evident that none of them could realistically have listened to the final edit of Live Licks before it was submitted for release.

The lack of input is probably more prevalent on releases made after they've fulfilled their contractual obligations. At least with this one, they're still signed to UMG for another couple of years.

"Jump Back" would have been a unique compilation for the Stones as it was actually their first release on Virgin/EMI after they signed to the label.

No one expects hard core fans to buy it. It's for people who have heard about this old band and their radio hits. They will be amused. And believe it or not, there are people who doesn't own a single song from this band.

But now you are talking about 1980; that's something else. The band, and especially Jagger, cared about their outputs. I was speaking about the last 20 years in my post above

BTW, there's gotta be a whole lot more examples of Jagger NOT keeping his word....

As Gazza writes; "Jaggers involvement" is a broad statement. Of course Jagger has to give the nod to the recordlabel when a new compilation is getting ready for release, but that doesn't at ALL mean that Jagger picked out the songs. Wonder why you say, as if it was a fact, that "40 licks were compiled by Jagger/Richards". Just because it says so in the liner (or whereever it says so) doesn't mean they picked out the songs. I think you are just guessing, actually - the tracklisting of their last greatest hits packages, or live records, seems to prove the opposite of what you claim.

Indeed. And its ironic that the marketing gimmickry for this product is aimed almost solely at the generation who a) are least likely to own a Rolling Stones record and b) the band have excluded from their concert audience demographic as they're unlikely to be able to afford to buy tickets to hear the band play the songs that they're now trying to get them to discover.

Inspired. Not.

Straight to the point. I quess it is a mission impossible to make a satisfying compilation out of songs that its target audience already completely owns... grinning smiley

Well, they put those two new ones for us, though... (but honestly, I think the disappointment and criticism towards GRRR, and, for god sakes, its bloody name & cover, has gone out of hand.)

And before anyone starts to say that 'they' - the band, their sites, record company, etc. - has promised too much for 'us', or 'hyped' too much about it, well, that's just normal product advertising.

Like always, when releasing stuff like that (greatest hits packages), the idea is to introduce the band and its music to larger audiences than their safe and sure fanbase (Santa Claus coming soon, won't hurt either). I think there always be potential, curious audience for them (in a way I think there is almost a cultural duty to provide that kind of highlights package available for anyone easily to catch). I think there is nothing wrong with updating the greatest hits package every ten years - which actually is a long time - besides, this new one IS going to be better than FORTY LICKS.

What's the track-list for the 80-song version? I can't find it. I see they skipped 'Dirty Work''s hit single on the 3-disc version again. Why do they avoid "Harlem Shuffle" like a Voodoo curse?? It got to #5 in the U.S.--it was constantly on the radio I remember--even the long version.

Well the four CD version is a vastly superior selection I must say, not that I'll be buying it.

I would certainly agree there's nothing wrong with updating a career spanning retrospective every ten years but if that's all you're doing what is there to update? (Yes, I know ABB came after Licks...just stretching a point.)

I think its effectively more a case of replacing it, rather than updating it.

All of the 36 'oldies' on '40 Licks' (plus 'Dont Stop') are on either the 3-disc or 4-disc version of the new compilation (in most cases, theyre on both)
