Maybe one of the Beatles experts here can help me out with this. At the very end of TNK, there's a few seconds of barely audible piano, played, I believe, by George Martin. My question is this: Is he playing an actual, recognizable song? Or is he just noodling around? If it's a song, what song is it?

Yup that is George Martin. It isn't part of another song, or another song, just an outro to the TNK.

I could swear I hear a couple seconds of Anthony Newley's "Once In A Lifetime."

It's possible, though, isn't it? Stop The World I Want To Get Off opened in 1961, so Martin certainly would have been familiar with it.

Nothing to say about the question of the thread, but this song is amazing. The effect of Lennon's voice is perfect.

And if you listen to the version on Anthology you find it's totally different, yet equally fascinating.

Although a Lennon song, Much of it is the work of McCartney.

It was his idea with the tape loops, Ringo's drumming and the backwards guitar solo, also played by him.

I'd rather listen to Tomorrow Never Knows 100 times in a row than listen to another cut from Sgt. Peppers thats been played to death on Classic Rock stations

Yes, McCartney did do a lot of the tape loops though. He was experimenting with tape loops and encouraged the others to make their own, which they did. But yeah, it is Ringo drumming with his cymbal work being done in a backwards loop.

It was not McCartney performing on drums but the unconventional idea to drum that way, was his.

Interestingly, Anna Quayle, the actress who starred opposite Anthony Newley in STWIWTGO's original London stage production, is also the actress who played the brief, but noteworthy, "You don't look like him at all" scene with John Lennon in A Hard Day's Night.

I know of one - We Can Work It Out but he taped over it at about the 20 second mark. Heard on the Lost Lennon Tapes.

Ringo came up with the title Tomorrow Never Knows, but this title does not appear in the lyrics. And the song has only 1 chord - C.

Paul originally experimented with these tapes but all the Beatles went home and made tapes and came back with them.

Five tape loops are audible in finished version of the song. Isolating the loops reveals that they contained:

A "laughing" voice, played at double-speed (the "seagull" sound)
An orchestral chord of B flat major (from a Sibelius symphony) (0:19)
A fast electric guitar phrase in C major, reversed and played at double-speed (0:22)
Another guitar phrase with heavy tape echo, with a B flat chord provided either by guitar, organ or possibly a Mellotron Mk II (0:38)
A sitar-like descending scalar phrase played on an electric guitar, reversed and played at double-speed (0:56)

Absolutely brilliant mash-up. I remember reading a review of the Love album in New Yorker Magazine that said something to the effect that it was the one track on the album that actually sounds like something the Beatles themselves might have done. In other words, something that even Lennon and Harrison would have approved of.

What's so incredible, is that TNK was the FIRST SONG that the Beatles recorded for the Revolver album! The date was April 6, 1966. It seems to have come out of nowhere. There was nothing else even remotely similar that they could have previously heard and been influenced by. The only recording they could have heard that was anywhere near that progressive was the Byrds "Eight Miles High", which had been released as a single a few weeks earlier, on March 14, 1966.

Face Value was released just two months after Lennon was murdered. Not sure whether this had already been recorded or if Phil rushed into the studio to add this track as a last-minute tribute. Makes me wonder what it would be like if John were alive and touring today, maybe performing this song as an encore. Just imagine the setlist he could have put together if he'd wanted to.

Btw, at the very end of Phil's version, you can just barely hear him singing "Over The Rainbow".
