He had custom made five string guitars to play open E on stage.

Prodigal Son - 1969

Wasn't Prodigal Son and You Gotta Move in '69 in open D? From top of my head he used open E for Prodigal Son in '79, and when he played guitar (well, posed with it) for You Got The Silver.

Intentional error?

You Got the Silver is featured in the Shine A Light movie, so it was performed in 2007 too.

Richards played Jumpin Jack Flash in open E at the NME concert in London 1968
How come nobody mentioned? Does it mean that I'm wrong?

Also; didn't Richards play JJF in open E at Toads Place in August 1989? Haven't listened to that concert in 10 years, so maybe memory fails. But at least he does the "intro chords" to JJF there, as os the studio version

He might have, but we can't say for sure because we don't have audio and/or footage from the gig.

Some finger positions in the photos from that gig do suggest that Brian's Gibson ES-330TD was tuned to open E.

He played open E on IORR 76 version. Around and Around on Love you Live is another good example...

- i'd say tuned to open D capo on 2nd (E)

strings are slacker that way, less prone to breaking

YGTS is open D capo on 3rd (F)

Can't blame him for staying in Open D on that Resonator. Can't recall what he played it on in '79; wasn't it a Jumbo acoustic guitar?

Thanks. Now that you mention it; I remember some discussions here on IORR about this, a few years ago. You posted some photos.
It would be somewhat strange if they were both tuned in open E - as it would be difficult for any of them to be doing any solos, if so. Not that they necessarily needed a solo; but...

Credit where due, in '99, he blew me away with how well (for Keef) he actually played while singing it. It wasn't slick, but it was beefy, soulful and over the right frets! His slide playing has always been fun, but (like his voice) slightly off and raspy.

Is there any live footage of this one? The original is in open E tuning as well, or is it this same guitar track ?

From the few pics available it seems Richards is in standard tuning, and Brian might be in open E.

I think they both played in standard tuning at the RRC.

I do hear a raised third string on almost every chord, must be open I think -g#, and Keith plays some tones on string 6 resolving to the E chord very smooth.

I am talking the BB track here.

Both open E and standard tuning are possible, I'm not 100% sure.
Take your guitar and give it a try.

Sorry, I saw the pic of the video only, and didn't realise you were talking about Salt Of The Earth instead of JJF.

On this version only the vocals are live while the music is the studio track. Can't remember exactly how the guitars are tuned on BB, but I think at least one was open E (or D).
