The 2 songs I always loved from that date are Gimme Shelter and Wild Horses (even with those bum-notes)! Some others are very good and I have to discover them again. A few tunes are not that good.
However, - the release of this LA gig is just great!

Here's some mastering i've done on Gimme Shelter

I've restored some of the clipping and dynamics
Also some adjustments on the drum sound...

So you are better than Bob Clearmountain?

It absolutely does.

The show has a pretty rare moment: Charlie losing time on a song. About a minute into "Happy"....Charlie loses it very slightly and regains himself a couple seconds later. Both Mick and Keith stop singing as they wait for Charlie to catch up. Amusing.

EDIT: after a second listen I notice that it's Keith himself that makes Charlie flub up. He begins to sing the second verse completely off time as if he can't hear where the rest of the band is. This causes Keith to change early leaving Charlie to pick up the pieces behind him.

Restoring dynamics and clipping or fixing smashed drums has nothing to do with Bob Clearmountain work.

Kevinkamphuis, curious to know how you managed to restore dynamics.

Listened to the mp3s on my iPod through the car stereo on my way home. I agree with some of the comments above, not much depth and kinda harsh and tiring for my ears.

ALL music in mp3 format through an Ipod sounds thin and harsh, that has nothing to do with how the music was originally mixed and mastered.

An Ipod really is the worst way to listen music.

Best release so far!

Fantastic versions of ADTL, Gimmie Shelter, YCAGWYW, Heartbreaker, Angie, Wild Horses, Fingerprint File!!!, BS, Midnight Rambler and SFTD.

Complaints about the sound must be due to your sound systems, folks. For me, it sounds fantastic, really great.

I've never heard Ronnie and Keith better. Listen to Keith on Fingerprint File - fantastic stuff. Ronnie owns YCAGWYW - no versions is even near this one.

I'm blown away by this thumbs up

What about the "warhorses"? I´m quite surprised about the version of Brown Sugar - GREAT, Keith plays the riff just like on Sticky Fingers and the very early live versions, and this pumping bass - WOW! Gimme Shelter is fantastic too, Ronnie nails the lead down in a great manner! So far my favorites, haven´t listend to all the songs yet ....

As with Hampton 81, again I agree with Kowalkski regarding the LA 75 release. Why do they do compress so much during the mixing/mastering process? It makes the music harsh and flat and with less dymanic range. I also think mixing in the digital domain has a lot to answer for: transferring the individual instrument tracks to digital then mixing in the digital domain. I would prefer if they mixed from tape multitrack to stereo tape master, then transferred the stereo master to digital. And didn't brickwall the result. There's no editing as far as I can tell, so a simple tape mix is all that's requried. Somehow Brussels 73 doesn't sound as bad as the Hampton 81 and LA 75 releases. Perhaps the older the recording then the better the result. Or they just didn't brickwall Brussels so much.

( I am listening to the LA 75 FLAC files through a decent hifi stereo system, through Sennheiser HD650 headphones and through speakers. I don't, however, believe there is any discernable difference between 256kbps music and the FLAC files

Also.. "listening on an a crappy ipod" as some have mentioned is more a case of using crappy earbuds to listen to. If you plug decent headphones into an ipod you'll get a decent sound. )

I agree wholeheartedly. Get some *really* good headphones! Makes a world of difference. It also helps to transfer the recording lossless to your ipod. A quick conversion from FLAC to ALAC is necessary, but a piece of cake. Freeware to do this can easily be found on the net!

Yes, Brussels Affair is no as brickwalled as Hampton and LA Friday. It's clearly audible, and you can see it when looking at the waveforms. But the miX is the same. That's why I think Bob Clearmountain has nothing to do with the brickwalled mastering.
So, obviously someone decided after releasing Brussels that the sound wasn't loud enough and asked for a louder sound for subsequent bootlegs.

He was guesting, just as Clapton and Santana did in NY.

What a bollocks. Just lower the gain by 2 or 3 dB in winamp or VLC and you're done.

Listened to the whole show now, and I must say, despite my original objections concerning Jagger's vocals judging from the samples, as a show it works, it's simply great. It may not work in all moods, but if one is in for some sleazy, raunchy R&R, that's the show to listen to.
