No they weren't. The Hank one was a 10-CD box and the Elvis ones were 5-CDs each.
Each contained unreleased material.
no i meant hank and elvis released a lot of singles instead of albums in the early years so a collection like that makes sense since a lot of the tracks weren't on albums
yeah hank williams imo is one of the most important figures in american music
be careful the packaging on that BAND boxset is pretty sketchy
Maybe, and also that they don't need to listen the whole catalog to be 'experts' and to offer educated judgements about the artist...

i own a lot of boxsets and was wondering what people think is the greatest boxset ever released? i guess it starts with what do you think a boxset should represent/contain? imo a boxset should give you a good overview of an artist and do a good enough job that if you didn't want to purchase every studio album by a band you shouldn't have to. i also want a lot of hard to find/unreleased material. here are the boxsets i have that i think are the best
1 cheap trick- sex,america,cheap trick (the best boxset ever)
2 the faces- 5 guys walk into a bar
3 stevie ray vaughan- SRV
4 deep purple- shades 1968-1998
5 alice cooper- the life and crimes of alice cooper

It kinda depends on who you like, doesn't it? For all I know, the Cheap Trick boxset really might be the most expertly-compiled boxset ever released. I still don't want to hear it.

Elvis put out 5 studio albums (plus a few EP's) in the 2 and a half years between his first RCA single (Heartbreak Hotel) and going into the army. After which, he didnt record any music for 18 months.
There were no albums for the 16 months he was on Sun in 1954-55 but RCA repackaged all that stuff anyway on albums by the end of the decade. To a lot of fans, it was 'new'.

The one no one has mentioned is the MFSL boxset for the Stones 60's catalogue...has to be one of the first and is a classic.
I love the Elvis ones Gazza referred to, I also think the Beatles Mono is excellent.
I have the Phil Spector Back to Mono, which is lovely, and the David Bowie set from Rykodisc is also quite nice.
I do really like the two new vinyl Stones boxsets, covering the DECCA/London Years and the RSR years. Even though the music is superfluous it is amazing having these pristine virgin vinyl records in beautiful packaging.
There is a Lennon 4 disc which I don't really listen to all that often and an Elton John one as well.
Some of my favourite Box sets were from VERVE from the late 80's...just beautiful Jazz collections. I have two of those, each 4 disc.
I took the time to finally convert all my CD's this year to losses files. Such an easy way to access all my music!

I gotta go with nearly every boxset Gazza mentioned -- emphasis on the Elvis 70's stuff on "Walk A Mile" -- and DE-EMPHASIS on the Lou Reed set "Between Thought & Expression" and The Who "Maximum R & B..." both artists of whom I love but sets which went over my head. Love the Dylan & Neil Young sets mentioned. I want to add the following 2:
(1) Merle Haggard -- "Down Every Road" (4CD) 1996
This is one of the finest collections ever compiled for commercial release by a single artist.
(2) Grateful Dead -- "So many Roads" (5CD) 1999
Just a cool trip through the vaults selected by fans that actually amounts to a great listen even for unconverted fans.

The Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 in blu-ray is a keeper. With all the old photos, handwritten lyrics, memorabilia, radio interviews, not-so hidden tracks, live performances, timelines, and the like, not to mention the ultimate sound quality, it's a lot of fun to hunt around in. It's a far more active experience than hitting the play button on a CD player. It's more like a sonic scrapbook.
However, I agree that the packaging is way too bulky. In addition, it's a bit pricey, and it didn't need to be 10 blu-ray discs. The hidden tracks are annoying at first, but finding them is easy after a little online research (look for alligator-clipped feathers in the individual song selection files and for pushpins in the timelines).
I'm very much looking forward to Volume 2, which covers his most interesting period, from 1973-80. But I hear that there are no plans to re-release Time Fades Away.
