Color me blonde - but what exactly is a "boxed set?" OR boxset as referred to here? Is it simply a compilation of all of a band's songs piled onto a couple of disks? Is there remastering involved? I have the Simon & Garfunkel 3D set - that covers most of their singles - is this considered a boxed set? In other words, is it simply "the best of" type thing w/ more than one CD?

Thank you - in advance- for any help understanding this term.smoking smiley

its usually a multidisc set. thats it. could be a hits collection, could be live material, could be unreleased stuff, could be a mixture of all 3

Does the artist decide what's to be "boxed?" Or is it the label? Or does that depend? I'm wondering how much creative input the band/musicians have in the process of creating these boxed sets?

Do the revised Exile recordings qualify as a "boxed set?"
Thanks.

It's probably trite to say it, but along with Gazza's great list I'd add that totally commercialized-up-the-yin-yang Springsteen Live 75-85 set, which inspired me to track down some of the boots of those complete shows from that period. The Darkness and River tours are just tough to beat. I just have a soft spot for this one.

I used to have an absolutely smokin' Yardbirds box set, but now that I think about it, I think it was bootleg box. Loved it, though....(Page, Beck, Clapton, etc., all given their due and their times to shine...)

Turning to bootlegs, the 7 disc Stones Touring Party from Rattlesnake is pretty awesome. Nice box, great selection compiled from the better sounding 72 shows (Texas, Philly, MSG) into one collection. Oh yeah, the artwork/packaging ain't too shabby either. For Stones collectors, this is arguably at the top of the crop!

Thanks for your help, guys.
Question: Would Hot Rocks be considered a "boxed set?"

I've always been a bit gun-shy of compilations. However, I guess the idea of "boxed sets" have been around for a long time (my parents had a Reader's Digest set that had to have at least 6 LPs).

Being a child of album rock I guess I'm a bit suspicious when music is repackaged.

No. Hot Rocks is an old fashioned double album in a CD format.

Columbia has released a beautiful series of Miles Davis boxes.

BIOGRAPH set the standard in its day.

Jimi Hendrix - Experience Boxset

Agreed with partnerincrime,

The Nuggets box set Vol1 is amazing: so too is Vol2 which has sub-Stones British beat music and world-wide curios, i.e. I'm A Mop by the Mops, Os Mutantes, pre-fame Jeff Lynne, Marc Bolan, and Bowie.

However, what Acre are doing by releasing individual single Cds re: songwriters such as Goffin/King, Pomus/Shuman, Penn/oldham, is to be commended. You have 20 odd tracks from the pen of a great songwriter compiled onto 1 cd.

My favorites:

Primal Scream - Screamadelica: 20th Anniversary Limited Collection

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power Deluxe Edition

What did you think of the Screamadelica box?

True that! This is a great box set I forgot about.

Also,
STAX all three volumes. This is an amazing collection.

Also, Live at Leeds Super deluxe is a beautiful box set. And unfortunately for those who didn't get it out of print. The book in it is amazing.

The Lennon Anthology is spectacular.

The Dark Horse box set is nice as well, although some rough patches in George's recording career, it is none the less, a beautifully packaged box set.

Depends a bit on the aim of the boxset

The Slade box is very good, excellent book etc but is essentially a big compilation with nothing that isn't on the albums.

Free Songs of yesterday is also great but to quote Amazon is 'Crammed full of previously unreleased studio tracks, mouth-watering demos, out-takes and other rarities,'

Dylan's boxsets are probably the best and feature nothing previously available.

I also agree on the Trojan box sets.

The Last Waltz box set is also magnificent.

keefriffhard4life- I like Cheap Trick a lot too, and the boxset is good. However, for me the coolest boxes are Alice Cooper Old School and AC/DC Backtracks in the amplifier box. For Stones I think the Some Girls is best so far. And Beatles in Mono is very cool, hope The Stones will do the same.

If I'm buying the stones 60S catalogue yet again, I want the release to be all true mono on vinyl, with the 'digital download' code and have those tracks be in HD.

That takes 'throbbing bass' to a whole new, uncomfortable, level.
