John thought "Ob La Di Ob La Da" was Paul's granny shit and John dismissed "Birthday" as some crap Paul came up with in the studio.

Paul recorded "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" without John and John wasn't too happy about it.

Yeah, John was a strange duck. John said his feelings were hurt when Paul did that without him, but for a guy always calling his music "granny shit" I don't blame Paul. John did stuff on his own too. He recorded Julia by himself before Paul did WDWDIITR. He did Revolution #9 by himself too. I think they were all going around and doing their own thing at that time, John just happened to like this particular song so he got all butt hurt over not being involved.

The White Album as single album:

1. Dear Prudence
2. Glass Onion
3. Wild Honey Pie
4. The continuing story of Bungalow Bill
5. While my guitar gently weeps
6. Happiness is a warm gun
7. I'm so tired.
8. Blackbird

1. Rocky Racoon
2. Julia
3. Yer blues
4. Everybody's got something to hide...
5. Sexy Sadie
6. Long Long Long
7. Revolution 1
8. Cry baby cry

and then 30 years later it's time for rest of the songs in a luxury box.

Ringo didn't agree, he was making a joke...

In this particular case - as when he thought Ringo shouldn't be used because he wasn't a "professional" drummer - George Martin was wrong. Probably listening to take after take of "Obla di bla Da" made him wish the sessions didn't go on so long, but the album's perfect.

Reminds me of those unfortunate people who think Exile has too many songs and their short attention span should be pandered to by making it a single album.

I don't know if he has ever agreed that it was self indulgent or anything like that, but there's a scene from the Anthology film (which has always kind of stuck in my mind for some reason) where he kind of concedes that it might have been too much, and calls a double LP "an awful lot of information" or something along those lines. I don't think he really was saying they shouldn't have, I think he was sort of playing devil's advocate

That's exactly what I was referring to. He did say that there's a lot of information, but the "white and whiter" was a classic Ringo joke.

Yeah but that's crap.

Leave that one out and you have "Paul is a Lie"

Boom... I said it.

(Only joking)

A golden rule when trying to compile this as a single set that would have been:

John + Paul will have the most songs
George gets 2
Ringo has to get 1

On my list I gave George 2, but no Ringo songs. Ringo doesn't HAVE to get a song. He didn't have a song on "A Hard Day's Night" or "Let It Be".

Yeah, John did not do Rev 9 alone. The George and Paul both contributed, but it was lead and edited by Lennon.

I love George Martin, but let's face it, he clearly prefered nice pop songs that he could do orchestrations on. "Revolution #9" must have been quite a shock to him.

If you hear Paul tell it he wasn't even in the country when Revolution #9 was made and when he got back and heard it tried to talk John out of putting it on the album.

In "The Beatles" by Hunter Davies (an authorized book with interviews) Paul said, in response to John supposedly having his feelings hurt over Why Don't We Do It In The Road:

"Anyway, he did the same with 'Revolution 9'. He went off and made that without me."

Of course with The Beatles (and other bands) the story you get depends on who you talk to and how they're remembering it that day.

Mark Lewisohn is considered an authority on these matters:

John Lennon - Spoken Vocals, Tape Loops, Sound Effects
George Harrison - Spoken Vocals, Tape Loops, Sound Effects
Yoko Ono - Spoken Vocals, Tape Loops, Sound Effects

In addition, McCartney and Ringo Starr performed on the extended "Revolution" coda, elements of which were used intermittently in "Revolution 9", and a line by George Martin was used as one of the tape loops.

Lots of info here:

Yeah, it was a tough call, but I wanted more George input.
Further, you can consider John's blues "Revolution" secondary
simply because it was already released in another form. That
was my criteria for removing it.

wow not much love for sexy sadie. I always thought that song was great.

It is ... and it perfectly leads to "Helter Skelter",
but I wanted more rock tunes on my list, despite that
"Monkey" and "Yer Blues" are very similar.

He would without a shadow of doubt have gotten one anyway back then. Don't Pass Me By was his first selfpenned song.

i first heard the white album on cassette and the song order was different than the lp & cd.sexy sadie wasn't on the same side as helter skelter. it took a long time getting used to hearing it in the correct order. i'm glad the stones albums were never done like that (as far as i know)
