OK...you're going to be EXILED (I don't mean to push the envelope w/ the with the use of EXCESSIVE CAPS)...and you can bring only 5 rock albums with you...and at the very most only two of them can be Stones...what would you take?

I got pissed off when Mick pulled the plug on SH, and the way he did it,
and I haven't really been able to listen to the album ever since, although
it was my favorite for a few months there...

But what SH did do, that has had lasting effects on me, is change my sense
of rhythm dramatically. Along with Damian's album.

Dancehall rhythms became how I feel things, not rock rhythms anymore. That's
what led me to Rihanna, and its why I suddenly have trouble with a lot of rock
now. The relatively simple rhythm.

I'll probably get back into SH eventually. As well as get back to rock more so.
But it is what it is right now, and there's a whole world of dancehall that
I'm really just starting to discover.

And actually, now that I think about it some more, I've always been a bit
oriented towards stranger rhythms. Its why tracks like Hot Stuff and Hey
Negrita and Too Much Blood were always amongst my favorites, when they are
obviously not amongst the most popular Stones songs.

How do you know for a fact that it was Mick pulling the plug?

This isn't the thread for this, and I don't particularly want to re-live it,
because it was very upsetting to me, but...

1) Dave, Joss, and AR said so, that it was all up to Mick whether they did shows.

2) I watched and listened with horror as Mick said some very disparaging things
about his SH bandmates and SH music while supposedly "promoting" the album.

As I said, I am not re-visiting that painful (for me) era. Feel free to go
through proudmary's SuperHeavy thread for more details.

Thanks for chiming in - it's interesting to see your picks. I also realize it's hard to come up with only five. When I read some of your posts - I'm like - YES - I must have Bruce (Born to Run) along...and what about Dylan, and U2 All That You Can't Leave Behind is one of my favorite records this century.

I was thinking about the music that sticks to your ribs vs. the stuff you loved at one point in your life but doesn't translate well to the "here & now." What's telling is the music that still clicks - that evokes a good feeling. For me, it's the guys on my list (and above). For some reason their stuff can easily translate to any age/any place. Music to me, remains the best way to time travel. And music is truly like food - we all have different taste - no one can say what I like is better than what you like. It's incredibly subjective...somethings just work. Yeah, you can try to explain it using "this is a great guitar lick," and/or "this a beautiful lyric" or melody, and on. But when it comes down to it, no one can be inside your head & hear things the way you do - vive la difference - to each his/her own.
Rock on!
