Well, all the various Stones incarnations have been named, and obviously I love them, but I'll just name non-Stones tandems.

Stone Gossard & Mike McCready - Pearl Jam

Joe Strummer & Mick Jones - The Clash

John Lennon & George Harrison - The Beatles

Bob 1 & Bob 2 (Mothersbaugh & Casale) - Devo

James Hetfield & Kirk Hammett - Metallica

Chris Cornell & Kim Thayil - Soundgarden

John & Tom Fogerty - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Just some that come to mind, and in no particular order.

Yeah tandems are cool although hardly necessary for "real" rock and roll like you state. Plenty of technology in thew studio to allow self accompaniment with the resultant music just as magic as if someone else were involved.

btw: a BASS guitar is still a guitar so that kind of fogs up your likely intention of two SIX-STRING guitars in tandem.

But it is a great topic none-the-less so here are my favorites:

Jerry Garcia-Bob Dylan
LowellGeorge- Paul Barrere
Dave Matthews-Tim Reynolds (this years Bridge School concert was just amazing)
Keith Richards- MickTaylor
Duane Allman-Dickey Betts
George Harrison-John Lennon
Eric Clapton (unplugged)-the other englishman (wish I could remember his name)
Jay Bennett-Jeff Tweedy

peace

Naturalust,

the other guitarist on unplugged is Andy Fairweather Low.

Clapton with Albert Lee on Just One Night is equally good in my opinion.

I don't know why people are listing Duanne Allman and Dickie for the Allman Bros. Yes they were the first but any other pair tops them. Including todays Haynes and Trucks. I still say the best was Betts and Haynes.

well you can start with the live at the Fillmore east record. That was enough to make the top ten for this category, easy. Haynes is hot, works hard at it and it shows. Just not a perfect match with Betts imho. He playes better duets with others I think. I have a recording of me playing with him actually, I
played a dirty slide and he sang and played acoustic. It's not that high fidelity but maybe for jamesdouglas i'll post it on the net. Still not sure the best` way to post only AUDIO to a site and link from IORR.
I know lots just use youtube with a photo slide show for the video but that means getting creative again with old recordings...not always up for it. peace

Hank Marvin Bruce Welch
Robyn Hitchcock Alan Davies/Kimberley Rew
Peter Green and Danny Kirwan

Can't believe it took till page 2 for someone to mention Green and Kirwan. Those guys seem to be close to forgotten. Everyone here should check out the Boston Tea Party tapes from 1970 (esp Rattlesnake Shake) and any live Fleetwood Mac performances from 1969 to May 1970. The Mac are unbelievably good - i'm talking as good as Stones,Beatles, Hendrix etc. What a tragedy all 3 guitarists fell victim to mental illness.I'm sure there was a story that Mick Jagger considered Kirwan for the Stones at one point. Mind you he'd never have been up to it psychologically.
