One great guitarist in a band ist great, like Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher or Hendrix or SRV. But I believe that real R'n'R needs two guitars in a band. So here we go : favourite guitar-tandems :

Keith Richards - Mick Taylor
Duane Allman - Dickey Betts
Dick Wagner - Steve Hunter
Brinsley Schwarz - Martin Belmont
Keith Richards - Brian Jones
Keith Richards - Ronnie Wood
Johnny Winter - Rick Derringer
Mark Knopfler - David Knopfler
Lowell George - Paul Barrere
Tom Verlaine - Richard Lloyd

Allman/Betts is amazing. Allman and Betts on their own is equally good. Check out Highway Call by Betts, and check out Duane's session work, particularly with Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, and Clarence Carter.

Rory Gallagher and Albert Lee on Jerry Lee Lewis's London Sessions is awesome.

Keith & Mick Taylor - what more can be said ?

Elvis Presley & Scotty Moore : Sun sessions. One acoustic and one electric: the basis of rock n roll and rockabilly.

Bobby Womack & Ronnie Wood - On Now Look album - it does exist, it sounds good !

Thunders - Sylvain!
Gossard/mcCready (Pearl Jam)
Jones/Strummer
Corgan/Iha (Smashing PUmpkins)
Innes/Young (Primal Scream)
Spooner/Steen (Tubes)
Moore/Ranaldo (Sonic Youth)

All my favorite teams are mentioned otherwise:
Hunter/ Wagner
Verlaine/Lloyd
Smith/Kramer
Allman/Betts
Whitford/Perry
Izzy/Slash

I like the guys from the Hellacopters.
Also Michael Bruce and Glenn Buxton; not flashy.

I have to add Brian Robertson/Scott Gorham. They had a wonderful interplay when Thin Lizzy was at their height.

Good album, but in fairness there mostly is a guitar trio there, consisting of Keith, Ronnie and Bobby (+ Mick Taylor on a couple of tunes). Listened to it on my way to work today, actually smiling smiley

This is hard as many of my favorite bands outside the Stones have only one guitarist so let's see.....

Keith Richards - Ron Wood
Keith Richards - Mick Taylor
Mark Knopfler - Mick taylor (on Dylan's Infidels)
Pete Townshend - Pete Townshend (studio overdubs)
Jimmy Page - Jimmy Page (studio overdub WIZARDRY)
Mick Taylor - Bob Dylan (Dylan's Real Live)
Brian May - Brian May (studio overdubs)
John Lennon - George Harrison

99% of the time I agree with the two guitar line up. There are exceptions like Free where the Guitar and bass are both lead instruments at times.

Moast of my favourites already mentioned

Hill-Holder in Slade. Rossi - Parfitt in Quo. Neither team great shkes on the guitar but excellent sound.

stonesdan60,

Real Live is awful, apart from Tangled Up In Blue's rewrite. It's mix is like wading through tar.

Knopfler/Taylor is a good tandem on Infidels.

Harrison/McCartney on Taxman is brilliant.

Harrison/McCartney/Lennon on The End is awesome.

Keith Richards overdubbing on Beggars Banquet is excellent.

Warren Hayes and Dickie Betts (sorry Duane is not better than Warren or Derek)
