Room 1009

If my memory serves me correctly in Shine A Light (the song) the line '...saw you stretched out in room 1009...' refers to someone (many people say it was about Keith, others dismiss this) obviously in a hotel - but was it the Riot House. I know the Stones used that particular floor on several occasions, so it would fit with the numbering of rooms etc? Just wondered!

I thought Mick and/or Keith had said at various times Mick wrote it about Keith but maybe its just my imagination running away with me!

crumblin_mice, are you talking about when Jagger rang up Charlie's room and said, "Is that my drummer? Charlie greeted Mick with a great punch to the jaw & said "Don't ever call me 'your drummer' again. You're my @#$%& singer." ?

I know that's the clip from Gimme Shelter, but I didn't realise that was the Riot House...if it is, then it could be. Althought I think the room Keith throws the TV out of was room 2015. I'll have to track down Blue Lena and ask her

I thought this song was about Brian, not keith.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home

Saw you stretched out in Room Ten O Nine
With a smile on your face and a tear right in your eye.
Oh, couldn't see to get a line on you, my sweet honey lover
Berber jewelry jangling down the street,
Making bloodshot eyes at every woman that you meet.
Could not seem to get a high on you, my sweet honey love.

May the good Lord shine a light on you,
Make every song your favorite tune.
May the good Lord shine a light on you,
Warm like the evening sun.

When you're drunk in the alley, baby, with your clothes all torn
And your late night friends leave you in the cold gray dawn.
Just seemed too many flies on you, I just can't brush them off.
Angels beating all their wings in time,
With smiles on their faces and a gleam right in their eyes.
Whoa, thought I heard one sigh for you,
Come on up, come on up, now, come on up now.

May the good Lord shine a light on you,
Make every song you sing your favorite tune.
May the good Lord shine a light on you,
Warm like the evening sun.

Always was led to believe it was about Brian also . To me the lyrics suggest that .

I had thought that perhaps it was about Brian, but I read that Mick wrote it about Keith.

Sorry Sway, I wasn't reffering to the Mick and Charlie incident...I don't even know what hotel that took place in!

that scene in Gimme Shelter takes place in/near Muscle Shoals, not LA.

i had to google "Riot House" to find out what you were talking about,
and according to wikipedia the room Keith and Bobby chunked the tv out of was 1015.

That's correct soul, I made a typo thought I'd put 1015. But you can see what I'm thinking; If the room at the Riot House where the TV was thrown out was 1015, room 1009 would be just down the corridor and the liklihood being that The Stones rented out the entire floor would point to a strong possibility that room 1009 was indeed at the Riot House. I'm not sure if Brian was with them on the tours when they stayed at this hotel or not. If he was then it could well refer to Brian...if not then maybe Keith, maybe a woman?

well but ... there are rooms 1009 all over. i tend to picture it more in a Morrocan setting to match the Berber jewelry -
but it might as well be the London Hilton, or wherever they stayed in Malmo

it could be about Brian or Keith, of course ... it's not about a woman -
a woman who's drunk in alleys and makes bloodshot eyes at every woman that she meets
isn't really prime subject matter for a glowingly loving gospel-flavoured number like this

True...we can safely discount the woman theory, but hang on a minute...Anita? I'd always thought of the scene as being in a modern western hotel either London, LA, SF type of locations, but I like your vision of the Morrocan hotel!

Guess we will never know.

I'm not great one for lyrics,I always thought the second line said ''terror in your eyes''
I always took it to be that whoever the song was about was scared or frightened

When on tour (not during rehearsals) Mick likes to stay in room 3109 at a certain hotel in Toronto.

Presumably only when they are touring in Canada?

nah - Anita (or Marianne) drunk in alleys making bloodshot eyes at other women
are no more appetizing a song subject than any other woman doin the aforementioned
society accepts that males who do those things can end up with beautiful warm loving songs about them,
but it's still not approved for women

it's always been "and a tear right in your eye" to me. it matches the gleam in the angels' eyes that turns up later on

I sure hope that song is not about Keith or Charlie or any male for that matter!! Strange interpretation....." my sweet honey love.." not about a woman?? Explain please...

Well we must not overlook the fact that when Jagger penned these lyrics it was the 60's - 69 I think. Within the whole hippy/free love zeitgeist such remarks about other men were not unusual and it just seems out of context with today's thinking. I'm still not convinced the song was about just one person. Could it not be that certain verses related to different people? Has Jagger ever said who he wrote the lyrics about. I've read the wikipedia stuff and I always take that with a very large pinch of salt and cannot recall reading anywhere a definitive answer as to who it was about.
