Which of the Some Girls bonus tracks have new vocals from Mick?
Posted by: drewmaster ()

To me it sounds like all of them except for Claudine, Tallahassee Lassie, Petrol Blues, We Had It All, and So Young (which has vocals from around '94).

Mick sounds terrific on both the older and the newer vocals, IMO.

Sorry Rockman, but that's one of the two that does nothing for me (along with Don't Be A Stranger)... the one that floors me is "Keep Up Blues" ...

To me, it sounds like So Young is a new 2011 vocal. For sure, it's not the same 1993 vocal we know from the b-side. The guitars are also different compared to the b-side. It could be alternate takes from 1993 or 1978 takes.

Chuck Leavell's piano solo is the same as on the 1993 version, though.

The guitars gotta be the same. They play the same parts, they just sound different. Ronnie's part could be new (probably not), but Keith would never play the same licks twice on a song. All the fills and solos are the same notes, it's just mixed to sound like a 1978 song and before it was mixed to sound like 1994.

To me, it sounds like the last chorus in I Love You Too Much (the one that ends with the second "Martini lunch" is new.

I´m probably one of the few here on the board that don´t have the 1993 version.
But for what its worth, I was very surprised upon hearing this new So Young how similar Micks vocal style (the ad lib stuff, the tone of his voice) was similar to the Wandering Spirit material.
So my gut-feeling is a 93 vocal of some kind.

These have vocals added later than 1977:

So Young (not 2011, but new vocals from 1993)
Do You Think I Ever Care
When You're Gone
You Win Again
No Spare Parts
Keep Up Blues
Don't Be A Stranger

Possibly a line in I Love You Too Much as well

to me it sounds like "keep up blues" has got new drums!
compare the feeling, fills & breaks. it sounds more like "she saw me coming" than anything from the some girls period!
what do you think?

Remember Tattoo You had no credits whatsoever, leaving off the great sax man Sonny Rollins among other. They didn't even want to pay Taylor for his obvious contributions on Tops and Waiting on a Friend. He had to sue. That may explain why.

Do you know for a fact that he sued? I've never seen any documentation on this.

After one week of getting used to the new bonus CD, I'm really impressed with most of Jagger's vocals. To me the only real clunker is "Don't Be A Stranger".
All the rest, I'm loving it more and more. Even a musically uninspiring track like "Love You To Much" is turned into a nasty Punk/Riff-Rock-Monster, clearly lifted by Jagger's inspired vocals and lines: "You call it morbid fascination/I call it nasty education..." It's an intriguing template for Jagger's great contribution in shaping and upgrading many rather "basic" song ideas during the Some Girls years (1977-83), and in some cases - like this one - even today.

+ 1, but I like Don't Be A Stranger as well. It's just one of those songs where I think it's ok with a little odd singing.

Claudine –original lead and backing vocals, new backup vocals added in 2011.
So Young – 1993 lead vocals, new backing vocals added 2011
Do You Think I Really Care – new vocals 2011, new acoustic guitars
When You’re Gone – new 2011 vocals and harp
No Spare Parts – 2011 vocals, new added electric guitar
Don’t Be A Stranger – 2011 vocals
We Had it All – new acoustic guitar
Tallahassee Lassie – original 1978 vocals, only handclaps and floor tom percussion added
I Love you Too Much – original 1977 vocals Keith and Mick, some lines are 2011 vocals (‘Martini lunch’)
Keep Up Blues – new 2011 vocals and harp. The intro until 0:25 seconds is completely new to me. The outtake available only has 2 guitars –Keith’s picking, and Wood’s slide, this released version has 3 guitars. Is that a new bass?
You Win Again: new Jagger and Richards vocals.
Petrol Blues – original.

I thought that too, but are you sure? Could be a guitar spliced in from another take, or muted guitar that was there in the first place. Hard to tell, because the sound is suspisciously similar to the original acoustic guitar that ends the instrumental part right before Keith starts to sing.

However, the fills in the intro are very much in the vein of how Keith would play acoustic later on, so you're probably right.

"I Love You Too Much"
MJ: "This is an old rocker - it's very Rolling Stones. I left the vocal but I changed a couple of lines 'cos I got bored with the repetition in the lyrics. You'd never know which lines they were, though. Keith added a few bits here and there."

I didn't compare with the outtakes, because frankly I don't find this release interesting enough to spend much time on.

The acoustic fills sounds like the Martin he used the last couple of years, and the fills are the same as what he did on the live version with Willy Nelson. The acoustic from the outtake still is there, and sounds thinner and more trebly. To me the fills are new.

About the intro of Keep Up Blues and the added electric: after a few listens I bet it's all new.
