The psychedelic rock appreciation thread (not OT)
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()

The Stones were one of the finest purveyors of psychedelic music and with The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Jimi Hendrix Experience gave me my first introduction to this great music form.

Over the years I've been an avid collector of all things psychedelic, from pop psych, US garage rock, acid folk, so called Krautrock.

I've had fun tracking down the weirdest psyche albums by people who you'd never in a million years thought would have gone down that route - Chubby Checker, Del Shannon, Lou Christie, Johnny Rivers to name just a few.

Anyway, any of you into psyche and what are your favourites. I'll start with a few of mine.

I can't stand the music but as you said, a very grateful collectors area..

Is 'Revolver' one of the first in this genre? (btw an album that I really dig)

Hey, Mick Dagger!

One of me fave genres, and there's TONS to mine there!
Problem though ... much of it is bubblegum disguised as psych.

I've always said that The Beatles and Stones ( particularly
Harrison and Jones ) were honing a style that would evolve
into world music.

CO, I'd say "Rubber Soul" really begins the trend, at least
for The Beatles. If you wanna see more seeds of the movement,
there's an excellent bio on The Red Dog Saloon on DVD that
traces the origins of the San Fran branch of psych. Acts such
as The Charletons ( which is generally agreed to be the first
Frisco psych band ), Quicksilver and The Dead were among those
to play at this unique Nevada canteen. That's where it really
started for the West Coast.

As for Texas, the Kings of Psychedelic Rock was The Thirteenth
Floor Elevators. Too dangerous for themselves and Texas, the
court system broke that band's back just about the time it
nearly broke nationally. Also of note was Bubble Puppy.

Incidentally, The Prunes reconvened twelve years ago to make
new music even though it wasn't a full reunion. Some of the
results are fantastic, captured on a collection called "Artifact".

Here's another one from them not released back in the day,
and at one time was meant for The Doors:

This is where it begins. Recorded in December 1965. Way, way beyond what even the Beatles had done up to that point. (Revolver sessions did not begin until April '66.)

Love The Prunes, Buzz. Great band. I saw them when they last came over here to the UK about 8 years ago. The two remaining members signed a CD that I cherish. Also love the 13th Floor Elevators. If ever a band walked the walk and talked the talk it was them. Completely for real.

There's so many great, lesser known bands from that time. The Human Beinz, Spirit, Q65, Paul Revere And The Raiders. Talking of which here are two incredibly Stonesy garage singles from Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Lyrically, Heads above the rest:

"Levitation", "Easter Everywhere", Preferred Mix:

"Levitation", "Easter Everywhere", Pretty Video:

Note the differences: the first is mono, the jug
is buried, Stacy's geetar moves forward. The second
is crisp with jug moved to the front.

Lyrics:

Heading for the ceiling, I’m up off the floor
I’ve broken my horizon, out distancing my door
High above the ant hills, in among the planes
Swooping down to hear the sound and movements of the trains

I don’t need these wings to guide me, they are hardly ever there
It’s the clear I made in-side me, makes me feel light as air
I’ve got levitation

The ocean rolls below me in liquid plastic views
My vision cones to nearest land and brings me latest news
The waves of higher bodies soon dazzling in me ears
Will center my vibrations with the music of the spheres

I don’t need these wings to guide me, they are hardly ever there
It’s thing buildings up in-side me, makes me feel light as air
I’ve got levitation

"Slip Inside This House" features INCREDIBLE lyrics:

Lyrics:

Finer worlds that you uncover
Plant the path you want to roam
Live where you're heart can be given
And your life starts to unfold

You think you can't you wish you could
I know you can, I wish you would
Trip inside this house as you pass by
Trip inside this house as you pass by

If your limbs begin dissolving
In the water that you tread
All surroundings are evolving
In the stream that clears your head

Come disciples to thee unending
Subtleties of rhythm power
Trip inside this house as you pass by

Sweep the shadows from your eyes
Sweep the realm of dark aside

Trip inside this house as you pass by
Trip inside this house as you pass by

Finally, a real freak fest from "Bull of the Woods",
their final LP from '68 TURN THIS UP:

Sunshine Superman by Donovan wasn't too far behind. It was written atthe end of 65 but its release was held up due to contractual problems.

One of the all time greatest psych bands, The Pretty Things, featuring the brilliant ex-Stone Dick Taylor. This is a mind-blowing single called Defecting Grey from 67.

I remember listening to this after being spiked with LSD while still at school. I went home and listened to In Search Of The Lost Chord and it sounded great. Never quite sounded the same again after that though. eye rolling smiley

It don't get no better than this

When I look up to the skies
I see your eyes a funny kind of yellow
I rush home to bed I soak my head
I see your face underneath my pillow
I wake next morning tired still yawning
See your face come peaking through my window
Pictures of matchstick men and you
Mirages of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you

I love the Psychedelic era. It was short, great, and then everyone moved on. Same with Rockabilly, same with Disco. That's the problem with Rap. It never really evolved, or got off the stage. It should have lasted from about 1983-86, and then died.

Back to Psychedelia: I was young, and AM radio was the only thing at the time, but I remember this song subverting my ears with it's strange sound and the lyrics, "Elevator in the brain hotel. Ah, broken down, but just as well."

Paul Revere and the Raiders actually had a medium sized hit single with this pop psychedelia.

Zero Time-Tonto's Expanding Headband
Black Mass-Lucifer
I Pity Inanimate Objects-Godley and Creme(in the 80's but still a great psychedelic song)
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Robert Goulet's version of Green Tambourine!

Great song. That whole album, "Revolution" is first-rate.

I especially like "I Hear A Voice."

This song, one of the few sung by Paul, is one you never hear, but probably rates as one of the most sexist songs of the rock era:

#7 on the Billboard singles chart, July 16, 1966. Lyrically, this surpasses any prior pop hit. Except Dylan's. Maybe.

Every time I think that
I'm the only one who's lonely
Someone calls on me
And every now and then
I spend my time at rhyme and verse
And curse those faults in me

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to give me kicks and be my steady chick
And give me pick of memories
Or maybe rather gather tales from all the fails and tribulations
No one ever sees
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

When vague desire is the fire
In the eyes of chicks whose sickness
Is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played
The neighbor folks make jokes
At who is most to blame today

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to set them free and
Let them see reality
From where she got her name
And will they struggle much
when told that such a tender touch of hers
Will make them not the same
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

And when the morning of the warning's passed
The gassed and flaccid kids
Are flung across the stars
The psychodramas and the traumas gone
The songs are left unsung
And hung upon the scars

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to see the stains?
The dead remains of all the pain
She left the night before
Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies
And make them realize
Their urgent cry for sight no more
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
