Hey, Mick Dagger!
One of me fave genres, and there's TONS to mine there!
Problem though ... much of it is bubblegum disguised as psych.
I've always said that The Beatles and Stones ( particularly
Harrison and Jones ) were honing a style that would evolve
into world music.
CO, I'd say "Rubber Soul" really begins the trend, at least
for The Beatles. If you wanna see more seeds of the movement,
there's an excellent bio on The Red Dog Saloon on DVD that
traces the origins of the San Fran branch of psych. Acts such
as The Charletons ( which is generally agreed to be the first
Frisco psych band ), Quicksilver and The Dead were among those
to play at this unique Nevada canteen. That's where it really
started for the West Coast.
As for Texas, the Kings of Psychedelic Rock was The Thirteenth
Floor Elevators. Too dangerous for themselves and Texas, the
court system broke that band's back just about the time it
nearly broke nationally. Also of note was Bubble Puppy.
Incidentally, The Prunes reconvened twelve years ago to make
new music even though it wasn't a full reunion. Some of the
results are fantastic, captured on a collection called "Artifact".
Here's another one from them not released back in the day,
and at one time was meant for The Doors:

This is where it begins. Recorded in December 1965. Way, way beyond what even the Beatles had done up to that point. (Revolver sessions did not begin until April '66.)

Paul Revere and the Raiders actually had a medium sized hit single with this pop psychedelia.
