although not a great album i always thought that VL was and still is the stones best work since TATTOO YOU
Totally agree! For a band past their prime years, I think this is a pretty solid effort.

From the press back then it sounds like Don Was really tried. Not only with the different styles, the "psychedelia", and (to his credit) that he made sure the band was together in the studio for a long time. The things with Charlie in the stairwell, all the outtakes from the band jamming together, Ron and Keith doing BU vocals - all that was great.
The songs just aren't that good. And what is more frustrating to me is that from Brew, Stew we can tell that there was lots of better material left off. There always seems to be a cut or two left off, that we, the fans feel should have been included; but that's par 4 the course. With VL it is the entire album, and the identity of the album that drifted off course.

Visual motifs were changed to the whole Voodoo Skull thing. The CD packaging full of skeletons, fire, red, etc. You know... 'cutting edge' stuff. It didn't matter that not a SINGLE song had ANYTHING to do with Voodoo, but hey, it sure created a buzz and ALMOST made us forget that

How many songs on the "Let It Bleed" album had something to do with cake

What is this crap ?
Hey tourist, i got a few questions for you !
How many songs on the "Let It Bleed" album had something to do with cake ? There's a cake on the cover - so was there any songs about ice cream - Keith does mention pie on the Goat's head soup album, I give you that...but Can you name a song on the Tattoo You album that's written about a tattoo artist ?
How many songs on the "Goats Head Soup" album had something to do with goats or soup ? There's a pie in a song "Coming Down Again" but what about Steel Wheels album - can you name a song about steel factories on that album ?

My least favorite Stones album. There's just nothing on it that excites me the least. Dirty Work is bad, but at least there's two or three tracks that are nice. VL just has nothing to offer me.

There's no real outstanding track on it. Except maybe for Love Is Strong and Thru and Thru.

The only thing truly memorable about the album is the name and the tongue.

You're the same guy that judges tours by bootlegs. It's like judging someones personality by a picture. No wonders.

My choices for the winners song-wise from this album are:
-Jump On Top Of Me
-Love Is Strong
-Sparks Will Fly
-Moon Is Up
-Out Of Tears
-Brand New Car
-Sweethearts Together
-Blinded By Rainbows
-The Storm
-I'm Gonna Drive
The follwing fit the description OK but not great:
-You Got Me Rocking Now
-New Faces
-I Go Wild
-Mean Disposition
The remaining songs I could have done without but I don't understand how anyone can go on a board such as this and lobby for shorter albums because when a band does not know which songs are the best, a shorter album would not help in releasing the best songs, but instead, a longer album would.
