It's not underrated, it's just that the 1968-1972 era is a little overrated in comparison with the rest of their career.

Great stuff done then. I find it much more to my taste than the classic 1968-72 period as much as I love that. Really the 1963-67 is the Stones I love. 1968-78 I like a lot. After that.....
Looking at the songs from that period it seems that the Rolling Stones didn't write any agressive, mean, or nasty(in a good way!) tunes. Once they start writing about sex drugs and rock and roll they changed into something different, shocking. And that what a lot of people associate with the rolling stones. But as musicians they did pretty well during 1966-67, I agree with that.Quote

always found this period gets slated unfairly, i think it shows along with the blues, rock and soul music the stones excelled in, that they were an extremely versatile band in those early days.
between the buttons and satanic majesties in particular are critisized unfairly in my opinion these albums add to the mystic of the rolling stones. add in a few other compositions from 1967 and we would have a fantastic double album.

i just feel that if the kinks or the beatles had produced those songs they would have been hailed as classics but not for the stoens as it didnt fit the image.
