I'm not bothered that it creates that mood...Beggar's Banquet and Let It Bleed also cast a depressing mood.
I'm not arguing though, or comparing Black and Blue to those two of course as there is no comparison. I just think overall the songs on Black and Blue are better than Some Girls...that said, Some Girls is definitely more fun to listen to than Black and Blue.
Why does this matter at all when comparing albums? Oh yeah it doesn't.
Can we have a ban on anyone ever bringing this point up again, ever..
It annoys me everytime. It doesn't freaking make one bit of difference when the songs were written.
You forget one thing; not only were the songs written over a span of 9 years, they were recorded during that period, too. That means that the sound, the equipment used etc. will affect the result, whilst an album recording during one session will have its own signature. The album as a unit may suffer, doing what they did with TY.
But in this case, it didn't, imo.
One might also say that it may be easier to compile your best tracks over a period of time, and that a comparison with a session-made album might be unfair, but I agree with you here.

You mean played on stage? Black and Blue was played on stage entirely.
From Tattoo You only three out of eleven songs were never played on stage so far.
And Voodoo Lounge and Steel Wheels both have nine songs they played on stage. They've played
ten songs on stage from the Bridges to Babylon album.
Compare this with Exile, that so far still has six songs that were never performed live.
I don't think this criterion really says anything about the quality of an album.

Tattoo You has often been described as the last/latest great Stones album.
“Tops”, “Waiting On A Friend”, “Black Limousine”, “Slave”, “Worried About You” are really great but if I am not mistaken ,they are from some 1972– 75 sessions ?
Sure..Proclaiming that 1981 was the last great rock and roll tour, despite the Stones obviously playing Rock and Roll in 1989 and every tour after. and blowing 1981 Stones out of the water. That would be good.
Plus posts with pictures of pills that say Chill Pill on them.
But if you think my complaint doesn't make sense, then someone please explain why it matters one bit when a song is written and started when rating the song. Oh yeah, it doesn't make any difference, or any sense to even bring it up. Yet everytime someone asks for opinion about TY someone brings it up, and explains that you really can't rate the album because some of the songs were from an earlier time. Of course making no sense. They are being asked to rank what is on the CD. Period.

I have never understood that. Good examples of that are Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile and ER as well, which all have songs on them that weren't recorded/started for those albums (even Undercover has one that was started for Black And Blue on it). And some might not have even been worked on and were finished from the previous album sessions. So does that make them...less real? Less better? Less new? Less good?
No.
Especially when LIB, SF and Exile are such highly rated/loved albums.

Well Well Well...both of them released during the Punk-era so I can't remember that I jumped out my shoes when they showed up...The best rock-video ever done is on Tatto You so I say Tatto You... but on the other hand 'Just my Imagination' and 'Far away eyes'..brilliant songs...

Both are very good. If I'd have to pick one I'd say Some Girls - mainly because the album is more consistant (the concept New York, the sound, the variety that feels natural etc.), imo.
Track by track, Tattoo You might be the better one.

SG was more innovative, they reinvented themselves, and that makes this album a winner.
But i prefer TY, more classic RS's with some new style from post-SG's era.
By that tinme we did'nt know that TY was a compilation of new and old songs; it sounded as the best RS's album posible by that time.

Tops and Waiting On A Friend are from the GHS sessions, Slave and Worried About You are from the B&B sessions, Black Limo and Start Me Up are from the SG sessions and as I knew it Little T&A, Hang Fire and No Use In Crying are from the ER sessions, although Hang Fire was started during the B&B sessions just like Start Me Up was.

I'd rank them about even but I prefer Tattoo You.
Some Girls is great but a lot of the tracks sound similar and also I don't think the proto punk/whatever sounds is exactly the essence of The Stones. Sounds like them but a different band than made Let it Bleed, Begger's Banquet, Exile.
Tattoo You sounds like that same band maturing to me.

Some Girls: a great album, great guitar interplay, great songwriting (Beast Of Burden!).
