The most obvious would be Midnight Rambler. The live versions easily tops the studio version. And I have always loved how Under My Thumb sounded in 1981.

....even though I still don't like it...Streets of Love was better live than on record.

Terrifying (Barcelona 1990), YGMR,of course MR, Monkey Man was very good in 2003, but I am not sure if it was better than the studio recording. Another obvious example is Love in Vain, in my opinnion in 1969 and on Stripped.

Midnight Rambler is about the only one for me. There are great live versions of other songs but Rambler is the only one I like better than the studio versions.

I'm probably the only RS fan in the world who prefers the studio version of MR. The tempo, the slide riff & general murkiness are unbeatable imo.

Sleepy City - I did not say I did not like the studio version, I do its awesome. I just think the version on Brussells Affair is one of the best pieces of recorded rock and roll ever done!!!

I didn't say you didn't like it... It's just that I prefer the studio version to the rushed live versions (especially 1972 - 1973).

The only song I can think off-hand is 'Get Off Of My Cloud', as I prefer the more energetic live versions from 1966 (especially Paris).

Oh, & probably 'Monkey Man', if only for Lisa's duet vocal.

Jumpin' Jack Flash 1969 - the version on Gimme Shelter is even better than Ya-Yas!
Satisfaction 1969
Midnight Rambler 1969 - but every live version I've ever heard has been fantastic
Honky Tonk Women from Love You Live
It's Only Rock'N'Roll from Love You Live
When The Whip Comes Down from Sucking In The Seventies
Under My Thumb 1981
Imagination 1981
Time Is On My Side 1981
Start Me Up 1990-90
Shattered 1994

I thought Street Fighting Man and Monkey Man from the Licks tour, at least the Madison Square Garden performance, was outstanding but better than the LP versions? Maybe on some days. Brown Sugar from Twickenham (I think - whatever is on Live Licks - even as edited as it is, it's still quite good) was really well done but the LP version is outstanding.

I'm guessing that the live performances of HTW and IORR on the 1975-76 tours were (hopefully) consistent. Whatever vocal overdubs for the live releases and any guitar fixes don't really take away from the overall live version in a way. If that makes sense. Or at least in this context. I thought the placement of TIOMS and Imagination on Still Life is brilliant. It would be great to hear an unedited Imagination someday officially released.

I like the studio take, too. But it´s almost like it´s a different song. Midnight Rambler live is one of the few songs that holds a consistant quality thruout the stones´career, imo. Even the later versions were great.

No, Im also one of those. The studio version is the best even if I love the 72 versions, the 73 and the 75 versions. It was good in 1969 and 1971 too. The 1972 version is the best live version but it's really a different take on the song. And thats what makes it great in 1972. The studio version has that slide, sound and everything you said.

A song that never ever worked live is Monkey man. Theres only one version of that song and that is the studio version.

If you cant rock me worked better live - in 1975. That song, live, that year is probably one of the best live moments with the Stones ever.

You gotta move is so much better live, its not good on Sticky Fingers. Again, live means in 1975 but also 1976.
YGM and IYCRM worked better live.

Sorry forgot one more: HTW. But this is just 1975 and 1976. Not 1969, nor 1981 and forget about 1989- . HTW is a song I never listen too except if its live 1975 or 1976. Amen.

JJF - Ya-Ya's
Street Fighting Man - Stripped
Love in Vain - Stripped

For the record, I prefer the studio version of Rambler.

You know...I think EVERY song on Ya'Ya's cuts the studio version...and no exageration...It's what makes it so great. IORR on Love You Live gets my honourable mention...
