Live Stones or Studio Stones?
Posted by: wonderboy ()

Which as brought you more enjoyment over the years?
For me it is definitely their recorded albums, as I don't listen to the live albums very much and didn't get to see them live in their prime.
Probably they are best known to the public as the touring, world's great rock and roll band with Jagger the brilliant front man, but I think they did their best work in the studio and it's a shame more of their catalog doesn't get played on classic rock radio, which pretty much just plays Start Me Up and a few others.

the stones can be great live and also sloppy but they have made so many great songs in the studio and shown such diversity, so i would choose studio.

...LIVE STONES...

So many life-defining moments entangled in the swirling memories of my shows.
I've led a charmed-life.

For me, "live" is my favorite kind of Stones, but mind you - The thing that first got me hooked was Ya Ya's. Sure the studio versions are masterpieces but there's just something about the rawness and the energy of the live performance that gets me every time. Of course, to say this I have to be living in the past a bit. Ya Yas was such a thrill that I was hyper-excited when I heard they would be putting out another live album from the 1976 tour. Love You Live was sloppier than Ya Yas and not so menacing but I still loved the feel of it. Same with Still Life. Alas, from Flashpoint on their live albums became less of a rarity and their playing style changed from altering their songs on tour to replicating the official versions. I still enjoy the modern era live stuff all the way up to Havana Moon but in the modern era, I have to say the studio versions are better (with some exceptions, like Rambler). In the glory years of 1969 - 1981, gimme the live stuff!

Both.

Exactly
No need to choose one we have both to enjoy and both are brilliant.

Nate thumbs up

Their studio work overall, without question. Unless you're in the audience, I don't feel live music is as enjoyable.

I also didn't get to see them live in their prime (1994 - 2003, in my opinion) but, as good as the live albums from this period are, they don't compete with the canon of studio work that the band has produced.

'Both' is not acceptable! The question was Studio OR Live.
If you are offered Ginger or Mary Ann, you have to pick one, or you might not get either.

Or since this is a Stones forum, maybe Anita or Marianne would be a better way to phrase it.

Great to see them live, but studio all the way.
All of their studio recordings are superior to any live versions IMO.
Midnight Rambler might be the only exception, but I love the studio version as well.

Interesting you see '94-03 as their prime. I always thought it was '69-73, with another great period with the Some Girls-era tours.
Will have to give another listen to some of the period you mentioned.

Studio, but the live stuff is close ... Ya Ya's, Love You Live, Brussels, and '78 releases being my favorite by far, of the live material

Studio.

My opinion is this;

pre 78, their shows were better but so was their studio stuff.

since then, their studio quality fell harder than their live performances.

now we are starved for either form of music.

Both - but in a very specific way: some songs, like Under My Thumb from STILL LIFE or Shattered from the boot SPARKS WILL FLY and Jumpin' Jack Flash from the movie GIMME SHELTER and Honky Tonk Women from LOVE YOU LIVE and Sympathy For The Devil, Live With Me, Midnight Rambler and Street Fighting Man from GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! and Start Me Up from Atlantic City 1989 and FLASHPOINT I like better than the studio versions.

Other songs remain best as studio, like She's So Cold, Sway, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Beast Of Burden, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)... they just don't do some very good or even good live.

Studio...perfection.

Live - Sloppy perfection.

Man...if they would have put out the live 1978 bonus disc from Texas in 1979 that would have been one of the best selling albums of 1979.

The 1978 Tour was the Stones at their best.
The were in survival mode with something to prove.

I listen to both studio and live equally...but Love You Live is my least
favorite live album except side 3 (or the Mocambo tracks to quote Tom Petty "for all you CD listeners") which is one of the best.

Yeah! The great thing about the Stones is the great studio and live material.

Re: Live Stones or Studio Stones?

It depends on the song. I look at it on a song by song basis. Some are better live and some are better in the studio ..... many are great both in the studio and live. Usually it depends on the particular performances.
