Heard this song again today and remembered why I love it sooo much. The over all "groove" is just great!!

Can anyone suggest other Stones songs that contain a great groove like this?

For me, Hot Stuff, Miss You, She's So Cold.

It is a mind-bendingly incredible groove. For me, Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Midnight Rambler are among the very few tracks that equal it.

A great groove. It's a pitty though that they didn't manage to make a proper song out of it. The "song" is basically just a stretched groove that goes on a bit too long.

To me this is like saying an orgasm that goes on a bit too long.

Thematically the lyrics say the same thing as BEAST OF BURDEN. I just saw Sonny Rollins in concert last week, who plays the great sax on it.

Slave not a "proper song"??!?! Funniest thing I've heard in a while. The concept that someone feels accomplished (and self-important) enough to deem Slave not a "proper song" is just hilariously tragic.

Never thought of it like that, but I have to agree. I especially love the longer version that was on later cd mixes of tattoo you.

** edit ... looks like no one mentioned Dance - almost as good a groove as Slave.

You have a point about the stretched out groove thing, but still it adds up to a great, great track. With that in mind, if they ever did it live it could lend itself to improvisation and newly added lyrics. They could almost 'stream of consciously' add new topical lyrics too it while retaining the original text w/ cool new horn and lead guitar solos.

Slave is dynamite.

Slave is one of those tracks that even people who say they like the Stones are not aware of -- and it is such a great track. @#$%& the War Horses! Not a 'deep cut' for us to be sure. Like Dance 1 & 2 or Everything's Turning To Gold these tracks have such Bad Ass grooves!

there aren't many songs like Slave in rock and roll. first it states a big groove, from the drums/percussion

then the guitar puts it right on track, and the bass follows

but for me its that Rhodes electric piano, Ian MacClagan, that makes the track.

and how many rock songs have a veteran jazz master playing on it?

not many. when it quiets down then rises in intensity, there just aren't many Stones songs that do that either.

love it!

I agree, but it's Billy Preston on the Rhodes.

Slave is a great groove!

F%ยค#ck me, IMHO, ER, Tatoo You, Undercover (I mean, Pretty Beat Up is a Thunderstorm of groove!!!)

Decca recordings??

Come on, Come On,Stones got hold of the groove when they quit follow The Beatles and started directing the trends with the release of Beggars.

Before they were just a mediocre cover band with a couple of really good songs like PIB, Connection, Satisfaction, BSG, UMT and a couple of others under their belt.

You're a rag trade girl, You're the queen of porn, You're the easiest lay on the white house lawn!!

I know a lot of you do not agree, but to my ears Suck on the Jugular is (at least an attempt to)
a groove like Slave (and I like it, like it, yes I do).

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Nothing is more annoying then the English always using the word proper for everything. Cut the shit.

Often touted as a bit of a filler track but I think Baby Break It Down from VL has a great groove
