One of my favorite bands ever. So many songs that I like by them but one that stands out, besides Mr. Tambourine Man of course, is a hidden gem called Truck Stop Girl.

Younger Than Yesterday is a truly magnificent album; especially Chris Hillman's songs. A country-rock hybrid with a bit of psychedelia. Los Angeles folk and roll at its finest.

Buried at the end of the remastered "Notorious Byrd Brothers" CD, are the sounds of the original band breaking up. Sad, but fascinating.

Written by Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy

If all my days was hills to climb and circles without reason
If all I was was passing time, my life was just a season

Dares and dreams and silly schemes and fillies running freely
I was young and no song was sung that didn't sound appealing
I'd have my fun with a shy girl and maybe hop a train
And I'd look back at her standing in the rain
Dirty hands and root beer stands and money like a river
Making deals to see how it feels to get more than you're giving
I'd have my fun with a gamblin man and bluff him with my face
And it's drinks for everybody in the place

If all my days was hills to climb and circles without reason
If all I was was passing time my life was just a season
If all my days was hills to climb and circles without reason
If all I was was passing time my life was just a season

Shouting crowds and mummer's shrouds and people going crazy
Always said what was in their heads it surely was amazing
I had my fun in the bull ring and never got a scar
It really wasn't hard to be a star

If all my days was hills to climb and circles without reason
If all I was was passing time my life was just a season

Their cover of Dylan's "My Back Pages," is an absolute classic from that era.

Hell yeah let's talk about the Byrds! This is one of the truly great bands that had like 4 eras in less than ten years! Pioneers of Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and Country Rock, who also popularized and put out some of the best of those genres (Think "Tambourine Man," "Eight Miles High," "Sweetheart of the Rodeo".) Love the Gene Clark albums, love "5D," "Younger that Yesterday," and "Notorious," as well as "Sweetheart." The Clarence White years have some super stuff as well, esp. "Ballad of Easy Rider." Proverbial gun to my head, this is my favorite Byrds track.

I'll "probably" feel a whole lot better....

Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a phenomenal record. Gram Parsons is the man!

Really dig The Byrds and especially Roger Mcguinn's guitar sound and voice. Have any of you listened to 'The Pre-Flight Sessions'? It consists of a series of early demos and is pretty cool.

I like the preflyte stuff best.

I heard some back stage or studio out takes of one of the byrds really picking on or putting down the drummer it was some cOld shite.

That's a "hidden track" on the "Notorious Byrds Brothers" reissue.

I am probably unqualified to properly/exactly answer this particular question, but I am sure there are some here who are experts on this exact topic. When I go after something like this I enjoy making it a mini-project and go hunting around all the used record stores in my area (fewer and fewer) and examine the vinyl (and/or CDs) and have some fun with it.... if you find what you want/need viola!!! if not then maybe head for the box sets.... have a look on ebay or Amazon.... have fun with it.

It's always most intressting to have it on vinyl, the original albums...it isn't too hard to find them pretty cheap even here in Sweden so in US it must be even less problems...

Great, great band.

My favourite album "as a whole" would be Younger Than Yesterday, but regarding the individual songs The Notorious Byrd Brothers is even more fascinating, especially when counting in the famous outtakes (or shall I say bones of contention) like Triad. Still, as an album "Brothers" sounds a little bit like an overripe fruit to me, whereas "Yesterday" radiates more freshness and spirit, which makes it a more comfortable album favourite.

It's very hard to pick one's favourite individual track, as there are so many highlights to choose from. Without much thinking about, I'd pick "The Girl With No Name" (great sound and feel), "Eight Miles High" (an obvious choice, I guess) and "Everybody's Been Burned" (interesting that this one sports an ascending array of chords, as opposed to "Thoughts And Words" which takes exaxtly the opposite route).

One of the greatest!

Clarence White was a genius, and Chestnut Mare is an absolute gem. I like all eras, although they are very different.

Love the Byrds, Notorious Byrd Brothers is one of my favourite albums. Even the patchier lps had 3 or 4 great tracks (except the awful reunion one). Any group who jangled a guitar after them owes them a debt.

A few faves..

That's what I meant, Powderman and still ill: I could have easily picked "Chestnut Mare" and "Draft Morning" as favourites as well - such vast pool of great tracks to choose from ;-)

I posted it above (Dolphin's Smile Outtakes). Within days of that session, both David Crosby and Michael Clarke were out of the band, leaving McGuinn and Hillman as the only remaining members of the original lineup.

With you all the way there Greenblues. My favourite used to be Notorious as I love psychedelic music but I now find that Younger Than Yesterday has hidden and more enduring depths. Even though they are still in full Beatles Rubber Soul mode here the music has a great psychedelic edge to it. And as crazy as it is I love CTA 102.

Crazy little track! Remembers me of Hendrix (EXP) and some early Bowie ditties (vari-speed voices). Really cool to hear the song from inside that spaceship. Mars Attacks!
