Jeff Beck also has a great female bass player, Tal Wilkenfeld.

Bill is just as irreplacable as Charlie, Mick and Keith because his way of playing is of importance for the Stones sound as much as their input.

I personally think they should have stopped when Bill left. I don't believe there is a single "essential" Stones recording since then, though there are a few decent ones. As for live, it's just not the Rolling Stones to me anymore. It's a pretty good band (and lots of extras) playing Rolling Stones songs.

Yes, and I don't like them as much without him. He was an integral part of their sound IMO.

I'm not a "fan" of Bill Wyman, I'm a fan of Billy Wyman.

I think that's taking it a bit far. Can you imagine the headline, STONES QUIT BECAUSE BASS PLAYER SPLITS? And they didn't ask him to leave, in fact they tried tenaciously to get him to change his mind. For all we know they might have put out overtures to him for a few years after he left. They had to shoulder on. I remember them seeming a little vulnerable when Voodoo Lounge came out. With Bill leaving it certainly signaled a major change. It was odd to see the 5 become 4. They sure as hell weren't going to leave the millions, hell, probably close to a billion since 1994, on the table.

You could almost say that Bill has become more famous since leaving the group. And his musical reputation has only grown. It is a mystery that the other Stones never seemed to recognize or could verbalize Bill's talent while they all seemed able to praise Charlie for his steadiness, or Mick for his showmanship, blah, blah, blah. I first understood it when I heard Ya Yas. Miss You and Start Me Up showed how important he was. I remember reading reviews of records and there was always just the most passing, if at all, reference to Bill's playing. No one seemed to get it. I guess it took his leaving to do that.

Bill had been talking about leaving since around 1980, & even (along with Charlie) refused to attend the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in early 1989, saying it was "Too little, too late" or similar. So I think we can safely say he only did the 1989-1990 tours for the money.

You hit it on the head: They couldn't leave millions on the table, so they continued. But I can't think of anything musically essential they have done since Bill left.

There's a possible irony with Bill quitting and the Stones rolling on making even more money - had he stayed, would he have stopped whining about the money? It's too bad he left before the real money came rolling in.

I think he made the best choice regardless of the money: he has a life and his sanity fully intact.

if you dont care for bill or dont understand his importance to the rolling stones you dont understand the stones music at all.
you may think you do but you're f/cking clueless.

the guy is the best bass player the stones could have ever had.

he had the perfect personality to be in the stones, charlie and him would sit back and let the others be stars and their rhythm section was literally the bands anchor.
bills a one-off you wont find another like him ,which is why the band just gave up and hired a session player.

Anybody has an opinion why the Stones chose Darryl instead of mourning he didn't fit in?
It sure was easy enough to find a bass player with a Stones groove like Bill.

Maybe they didn't care too much about the quality of music for years anyway, put the emphasis on showtime and entertainment, and all that counted was cash-flow/ticket sales. Anyone else?

I think they just wanted someone professional and reliable, like Chuck etc.

He remains very cool and also totally grounded. Still, I hope he does have at least one live appearance with the other Stones before it's all over.

Watts said that Jagger told him it was his job to pick out the bass player. Apparently Charlie didn't want to spend weeks auditioning people because of his attention span for that stuff, and Darryl was one of the first people that auditioned. Plus Charlie liked the fact that Darryl could play some jazz. It wasn't like they tried real hard to get a new bass player.

What's the name of the white bassplayer Keith hired in "Hail, Hail Rock and Roll". He didn't look much but hell - he could play! They should have hired him. Darryl is vey sympathic but he was the wrong choice for them.

Excepting Charlie, you can tell the greatness of a Stone by how much Keith tries to diminish them.

why that's rather nasty 24FPS, maybe true when he was addicted and insecure but now that he is less addicted and indifferent I'll bet his relationships to the band have matured a bit. peace.

With all respect I am referring to the current day Keith. He trashed Mick in 'Life'. The only begrudging compliments he came up with for Bill are that he had 'talent' and 'timing'. For some perverse reason the only Stone he can compliment on a consistent basis is Charlie. Not a word of the feeling Brian played with. Not a nod to the incredible lyrics Mick is still writing. Not even a toss to Bill for keeping the band together on stage when it could get very ramshackle in the 70s. Maybe it's an English thing, being closed with your emotions. Unfortunately I've seen it with some great, but insecure artists who don't like their spotlight encroached upon.

I don't agree that Bill was irreplaceable as Charlie. Because, although some people may opine that the Stones haven't been the Stones since Bill left, that actually isn't the case. The Stones have continued without Bill. They are, in fact, still The Rolling Stones. They may not be YOUR Rolling Stones, but they are still THE Rolling Stones.

That said, I kind of understand what the Bill lovers are saying; if Charlie would have left in '91, I couldn't imagine loving the band as much, but when Bill left, I kind of shrugged. He was great, and I definitely miss(ed) his playing, but I think DJ does a fine job and, as I've stated before, I think the vast majority of the shows since he joined have blown '89/'90 out of the water.

I do find it odd that so many people who have followed the band since '94 seem to hate it so much....
