I think that's taking it a bit far. Can you imagine the headline, STONES QUIT BECAUSE BASS PLAYER SPLITS? And they didn't ask him to leave, in fact they tried tenaciously to get him to change his mind. For all we know they might have put out overtures to him for a few years after he left. They had to shoulder on. I remember them seeming a little vulnerable when Voodoo Lounge came out. With Bill leaving it certainly signaled a major change. It was odd to see the 5 become 4. They sure as hell weren't going to leave the millions, hell, probably close to a billion since 1994, on the table.
You could almost say that Bill has become more famous since leaving the group. And his musical reputation has only grown. It is a mystery that the other Stones never seemed to recognize or could verbalize Bill's talent while they all seemed able to praise Charlie for his steadiness, or Mick for his showmanship, blah, blah, blah. I first understood it when I heard Ya Yas. Miss You and Start Me Up showed how important he was. I remember reading reviews of records and there was always just the most passing, if at all, reference to Bill's playing. No one seemed to get it. I guess it took his leaving to do that.

You hit it on the head: They couldn't leave millions on the table, so they continued. But I can't think of anything musically essential they have done since Bill left.

It's pretty plain.

There's a possible irony with Bill quitting and the Stones rolling on making even more money - had he stayed, would he have stopped whining about the money? It's too bad he left before the real money came rolling in.
I think he made the best choice regardless of the money: he has a life and his sanity fully intact.

if you dont care for bill or dont understand his importance to the rolling stones you dont understand the stones music at all.
you may think you do but you're f/cking clueless.
the guy is the best bass player the stones could have ever had.
he had the perfect personality to be in the stones, charlie and him would sit back and let the others be stars and their rhythm section was literally the bands anchor.
bills a one-off you wont find another like him ,which is why the band just gave up and hired a session player.

Anybody has an opinion why the Stones chose Darryl instead of mourning he didn't fit in?
It sure was easy enough to find a bass player with a Stones groove like Bill.
Maybe they didn't care too much about the quality of music for years anyway, put the emphasis on showtime and entertainment, and all that counted was cash-flow/ticket sales. Anyone else?

Excepting Charlie, you can tell the greatness of a Stone by how much Keith tries to diminish them.

why that's rather nasty 24FPS, maybe true when he was addicted and insecure but now that he is less addicted and indifferent I'll bet his relationships to the band have matured a bit. peace.
