When were the Stones as most hard-rock?
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

One major reason why the Stones is my number one band is that they spawned over so much different genres over the years. You can get everything out of the Stones. There is of course blues but there is also rock n roll, pop, soul, country, gospel, reggae, funk, disco and so on...
As a fan of bands like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple etc. I've always enjoyed the more harder side of the Stones, Tracks like Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch, All Down The Line and Flash from Ya-Ya's. This is the Stones at their finest imo, and the closest they ever came to hard-rock. Any different opinion? smoking smiley

they veered toward a more hard rock sound during UC/DW, especially the guitars, but it would be a stretch except maybe a song or two on each to even consider the band or those albums as hard rock. IMHO

I saw people in the hardrock world
liking dirty work
even play the motha in the bars!
back than the stones were not hip at all...in those times they refused to play the stones(over here)
than those hardrock people played d work( i bought that album 2 months after its release...cause i was a bit cynical about the stones in that year....wich was a new feelin cause i always bought the albums the day they came out)
...but it was not that bad in my eyes
i always loved
one hit
fight
hold back(everybody hates this tine)
to rude
winning
dirty work
and sleep
that makes 7 tunes all right with me
enough for a tour
ohhh and harlem is not a bad cover
i didnt like the sound of the album
and i didnt like the violent mood
but they was like that so that is that

And in 73 they was the best hard rock an rollin band in the world
but i will not call it a day..and i sure wont call it hard rock
why not?
cause there is so much swing and soul
i mean TD!
or doo Doo Doo Heartbreaker a hardrock band in the 70 ties...would have never done such a tune ....the lyrics of the hard rockin stones was so much deeper than lets say deep purple
So why did i listen to the deep? cause i always love to hear mr Blackmore
Mick taylor played a big part in this era....but i like him more than other hard rock guitar players
he had much more blues and melody
no i cannot see the stones as hardrock(same with Hendrix) cause both cross borders music wise
now black sabath was a real hard rock band
with one (just one!) non hardrock tune''on that paranoid album (paranoid= the hard rock satisfaction)any one remembers this spooky ballad on parai forgot the tittle tit all
cheers

They were never hard rock. However the 12" mixes of Undercover and One Hit and later songs like Rock And A Hard Place were a real nod to the 80s stadium rock sounds of bands like Bon Jovi so I'd say the band were flirting with that, kinda keeping a foot in both camps.

Maybe it is the piano that holds it back from being hard rock...
Is there any "hard rock" piano?... maybe it is more boogie woogie than hard rock,
although if you asked my Grandma... she used to yell, turn that hard rock crap dowm!!

Never hard rock. The Stones always had a unique genre of their own and didn't really stray into hard rock territory. That is mainly due to their vacarious influences...blues, rockabilly, gospel, country, reggae, soul etc etc. It was a melting pot of all these elements which made the Stones what they are. Even at the height of the frenetic 72/73 tours with the soaring lead guitars and crunching power chords they still stood apart from the likes of Zeppelin and Sabbath and you could always tell it was the stones. Can you imagine any other Rock band doing the type of songs they've done? True Zepp dipped their toe in country and reggae but that's all it was.

Probably a few songs on the It's Only Rock N Roll, Some Girls, Tattoo You, Undercover, Dirty Work and Steel Wheels albums.

Piano was never a hard rock instrument. And neither was organ really. It was more of a prog instrument as used by groups such as Yes, Genesis, King Crimson,ELP and Procul Harum. Deep Purple came from prog rock roots to develop into a great rock band but can't think of too many other acts who did it well.

Thats what I thought... but it seems like there is something I am forgetting... oh well, someone will come up with it... until then, yeah... yeah.... Jon Lord is a bad ass. When he sythned that keyboard it was hard rock...

I found this cool clip.... going between piano and growling synth...

Not sure this is the right forum to be discussing someone's rock hard organ.

Hard Rock seems to imply a style of music; if the question were more of "when did the Stones rock the hardest", I'd say on the Some Girls album. Although the live versions of Midnight Rambler before that could certainly qualify.

Dirty Work certainly tried to compete with the bands of the day, but like the bands of the day it lacked the backbone of rock and roll, the 12 bar blues rhythm guitar. On most songs anyway. Had It With You seemed to go there though.

They swing too much to be labeled as hard rock.

If, by "hard-rock" you mean "kick-ass", then just watch L&G.

imo its the guitar tone of steel wheels that makes that album the most hard rock
