I agree. Even in the Peter Green days those two didn't have much stage presence.

When it comes to musicians with no stage presence they're all males. Its something i've never noticed in female musicians for some reason.

Cant wait to be bored to tears by Dylan & Knopfler in October. Two nights in a row. Better bring my hammock!

Good answer - we all know you will NOT be bored! Dylan's new "song and dance" routine when he moves away from the keyboard is hilarious. Dylan is many things - boring is not one of them.

Perhaps it's because female musicians have to try a lot harder to succeed in a male-dominated industry? Interesting point though. Amy Winehouse for example is someone who undoubtedly had great stage presence (I'm not a fan of all of her music, but I found her as hypnotising to watch as Mick Jagger or Jerry Lee Lewis or James Brown at their peaks).

I always thought Dylan had a cool stage presence, especially during the Rolling Thunder era, that white face paint was one of the coolest rock and roll looks ever.

That's a bit different from now though, when he hides himself behind a keyboard.

I think it was Townshend who said, "Our fans don't want us to be like Pink Floyd and stand there like four dead people and sound fantastic".

It was Townshend,Not that he'll have to worry about that now since two of The Who actually ARE dead,,,,,

What was the deal with the mime makeup? Any Dylanologists know the full story behind that? Maybe it was his first big arena tour? And he was afraid the people sitting far away wouldn't be able to see him? So he put on a white mask, knowing that when the spotlight hit it, you'd be able to see his puss even a quarter mile away?

It wasnt an arena tour (and he'd done arena tours before that - '74 was big venues)

The shows were all in New England (with a couple in Canada) and most were in relatively small theatres. He didnt wear the face paint at every show. It just appears that way from the concert footage used in 'Renaldo & Clara'.

Try googling "white face dylan". You won't believe how much there is on this. One theory I read, that makes absolutely no sense at all, is that he did it so you would not look at his face, but would instead listen to his words.

New York, London, Vienna...any Philharmonic. Now they are great musicians. Where the hell is the Light Show? Pyrotechnics? Drinking or smoking on stage? I almost fell asleep, but the guy coughing behind me kept me awake.

The deal with the white mask was that he was listening to one of his own albums while eating a plate of yoghurt.

Nobody mentioned Bill Wyman, Did anyone ever see him moving on stage? (except walking on and off). Even Mark Knopfler seems to move more.

Bill still had presence. There was something about his unsmiling face & lack of mobility in the early days that was mesmerising.

yes, but if they did a comeback tour it would outstrip any othe band by miles, they could name any price and sell out dozens of times the world over, so how boring would that be. When David Gilmour did comfortably numb back in May on the Wall tour with Roger Waters he just stood on top of the wall and played, people were in tears it was one of the best moments in musical history, now that wasn't boring!
