I really like the opener in Vancouver. It's a bit ragged at times but they do cover some interesting Exile tracks such as Ventilator Blues which would later be dropped.

I suppose that the quality of the recording you listen to has a big influence on your choice.

I will try to hear Knoxville and Indianapolis now.

And as well.

The run of shows over a period of a week in early July (even if the recordings arent always top notch) are the best performances of the tour - Norfolk, Charlotte, Knoxville, Akron, Indianapolis (did I miss any out?)....

Charlotte is probably the pick of the bunch.

The late Toronto is one of my favs and imho Norfolk is VERY uneven. I'll take Charlotte over Norfolk any day.

And let's raise some controversy : overall the MSG residency is not that good.

The Indianapolis show still resonates for me. I didn't have a ticket when I traveled from Chicago to Indy for the show, but some good soul, in the parking lot of the arena, sold me a ticket for $20!

Washington is fantastic as well, Taylor is on fire.

Charlotte for me...just wish the Yank tapers had a clue about recording concerts ?? smiling smiley
Most are lousy...

Mobile recording equipment was somewhat primitive in 1972.

From what I recall, the Charlotte one is pretty good quality for an audience tape.

as I write I'm about one and a half miles from where that show occurred.

but at that time I lived 100 miles from there. and I didn't go, couldn't drive then, but MAN I wish I had gone...

those '72 shows are the best IMO.

cheers!

No one mentioned Fort Worth.

Is the Knoxville show available on vinyl?

"just wish the Yank tapers had a clue about recording concerts"

The Mike Millard version of the late June 11 L.A. gig ain't bad (even though HTW is missing on this one).
Far inferior to what MM achieved in 1975 but very listenable for a "Yank" taper grinning smiley

Are you sure that's a Millard recording? I was under the impression he didn't start taping shows until '74.

From the Weedwacker67 note that came with the recording :

"Notes:
1st gen reel from the JEMS archives of the 2nd show The Stones played this night at 7pm. It is an almost complete recording missing a little bit of Sweet Viriginia and cuts out during Street Fighting Man and is also missing the encore afterwards. As of this writing (July 2011) 'S' does not remember exactly who's master tape he dubbed at the time to reel but thinks this may be one of Mike Millard's recordings that he dubbed during a weekend dubbathon of both their master tapes in his living room."

You're right Andrew : this might be a MM tape.

Interesting, dcba, I love the JEMS series on DIME, both their own efforts and ones from the archives. They were based in Seattle, weren't they? Or is it that they have access to the masters of "Stanley Washington" who taped a lot of Seattle shows? That would be cool if this were actually an early Millard effort, guess we can only speculate at this point.

I mostly reach for Philly or NY, if I want to catch some STP vibes. Well played shows with a great energy to them and great recordings at the same time. I fully appreciate that the often mentioned string of shows, including Knoxville, Charlotte and others may represent the point when the group was playing like a well oiled machine, but still... with these Philly and NY shows the "mix" is just right - maybe it has also something to do with knowing the Philadelphia Special and Welcome To New York so well - whereas others like Drippin' Honey only came into focus much later. And don't forget the sound quality. If I choose to play one of those early-July audience recordings, I put on Norfolk in most cases, as there a great sounding vinyl-rip available which is much more fun to listen to than to a recording like, say, Knoxville.

For starters you can go to yotube and hear practically a whole show there.
You can download them on any torrent site.
Or you can acquire the actual discs in many places.
