Rolling Stones Songs With Phaser

My tremolo and vibrato thread seemed to grab some's interest. Figured I do one for phasers.

I've read that Keith used the MXR Phase 100. Did he ever use a Phase 90, or any of EHX's phasers?

Here is Wiki's explanation of a phaser.
A phaser is an audio signal processing technique used to filter a signal by creating a series of peaks and troughs in the frequency spectrum. The position of the peaks and troughs is typically modulated so that they vary over time, creating a sweeping effect.

Uni-vibes will be included. What about Leslies?

1. Shattered
2. Beast Of Burden
3.

Leslie on Let It Loose.

Can you hear the music?

Coming Down Again...?

Oh, I think phasers are one of my favorite effects. Here a few, of the ones, I own. Sorry for the poor quality, cell picture. Clock-wise, from top-left. The Psilocybe sounds great. The MDV2, with it's rate barely moving, gives a nice texture to my lead work.

Fulltone MDV2
HBE Psilocybe
MXR Phase 100
EHX Worm
EHX Small Stone (US)
EHX Small Stone (Sovtek)

Leslie on 'If You Really Want To Be My Friend'.

Re: Rolling Stones Songs With Phaser

"Fingerprint File"
"Through the Lonely Nights"
"Never Let Her Go" - Flanger, I'd say
"Never Make Me Cry" - Phase
"No Spare Parts" - Phaser on elec piano
"Just My Imagination" didn't Keith use Phase on the live version of this one?
Same with the 75 version of "Wild Horses" on electric guitars
"I Need You"
"Munich Hilton"
"Some Girls"
"Down in the Hole" ?
Feel on Baby" serious flanger

I think Keith and Ron were heavily using Phaser in 77-79

I am not sure what the settings on "Living is a Harder Love" at that intro are. Phase or Leslie? With some good crunch

I don't think Keith plays on FIngerprint File either. That rhythm guitar is Jagger.

On the 1975 tour: Angie (at least all the versions I have), Gimme Shelter (on some versions I have, he has it on in the beginning, switches it off, and then turns it on again for the end).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a version of Sweet Little 16 from '78 where he has it on (at least for the intro)?

Miss You (middle)
Imagination
Some Girls (Jagger's guitar, intro)
Shattered (of course)
Beast Of Burden (some live versions)
Send It To Me
All About You

Keith does the Wah, Jagger is on rhythm through a Leslie.

You sure that isn't a Phaser on FF on Jagger's guitar?

A Leslie for sure live (Wood's Leslie cab that he used for Wild Horses solo). Studio I am not totally sure as there's quite some processing going on. It could sound like a Phase 100, but there's something too lush about the sound for it to be a MXR. There's a tremelo effect to it that is missing in any phase pedal.

Thanks M, on the info about that live sound. It was puzzling me.

What do you think is the effect on "Living is a Harder Love" ?

Re: Rolling Stones Songs With Phaser

I thought that I heard phasing on the intro to "Sweet Lil 16" too.
But I attributed it to either phasing problems with the outdoor bootlegging recording set-up; or "Sweet 16" often came right after "Shattered" in the setlist. Maybe Keith still had the phaser on. Someone forgot to stomp.

No, Sweet L16 has phaser on the intro for every '78 show.

Yeah, it does.
But I am positive it is a Phaser on Fingerprint File. Every Leslie effect I've heard (with a guitar especially) has a bit of that metallic flanger tint to it, which I don't hear on FF at all.

It sounds too lush to my ears to be a MXR...I have the same equipment as the Stones had in around '73/'74, and I do not get the same sound as with a Leslie, which I don't have.

Been working on a playlist of Stones songs with phase (phaser).

Criss Cross
Coming Down Again
Through The Lonely Nights
Fingerprint File
Some Girls
Beast Of Burden
Shattered
I Think I'm Going Mad
Infamy
Whole Wide World

That seems a bit off with such a huge gap in time but it's all I could come up with.

I found an old thread from 2011 which offers some more suggestions:

Whole Wide World

There is a rehearsal clip of She's So Cold from 2014 where he uses phaser. On the studio version he uses analog delay.

Am I really the person who read the title and thought there would be a Star Trek connection?

I can't identify them specifically, but there are a bunch of trippy effects going on in the "It's so mesmerisin'..." section of "Rocks Off".

Yes...not a phaser...but there's something else going on behind that more obvious tremolo.

Maybe a Leslie derived thing ?

That bit in Rocks Off is, to my ears, flange, obviously added in post-production.

Didn't know (or forgot) there was a same thread in 2011. Didn't even think to search for it.

I forgot about it too. I was all excited when I read the title. Then I clicked...
