"CYHMK, of course, is probably the BEST sound Keith has ever gotten out of a guitar and amp together." Agree with you : I just would add : 1973 version " Brussel Affairs" together with Tumblin'Dice from that ultimate Stones Album.

Black tele custom on Hail Hail RnR .

I thought Chuck (Berry, not Leavell) had a better sound than Keith in this, particularly during the rehearsals.

I think the Gibson humbuckers in Chuck's guitar are better suited for Berry's tunes than the single-coils in the Strat Keith used.

thumbs up

The Mocambo sound, and then CYMHK.

Yeah, the El Mocambo sound was great, especially compared to the rest of LYL, which was horrid.

The sound of the Gibson Les Paul Junior through the Fender Twin during the Voodoo Lounge tour was just fantastic. Like an orgasm

Live--> El Mocambo club shows 1977
Studio-->Some Girls 1977

So 1977 apart from the trial was a successful period.
Gotta love those Boogie sounds and the touch of phaser on studio tracks.

the Midnight Rambler sound from both LIB and GYYYO...fatter than the fattest sound...

The live openings from 72-81 of YCAGWYW. Just him alone on a very loud guitar, playing the slow, melodic phrasings on those two chords. And then Jagger comes in, and big applause. Love that.
The louder he is, the better it sounds. In 81 those openings were fabulous.

Whoever posted about Frusciante's sound - I concur. Great Stratocaster sound and great playing of course.

I find the guitar sounds of the Paris '77 and '78 recordings even better than what finally ended on Some Girls and ER. It's rawer and less refined on the bootlegs. Check out the outtakes of Whip for example. That is his absolute best sound in my opinion.

Compare the almost-brittle chug of the intro on "Happy" to the opening fat 'n' crunchy seconds of "You Shouldn't Take It So Hard": complete different tone/time/space ... but the perfect touch on each.

But yes - throw another vote in the hat for "Can't You Hear Me Knocking".

Totally agree with you Mathjis thumbs up,i heard a few bootlegs from 77-79 sessions from Paris (and the RCA studios and Nassau too) and the sound raw, some times clean and dirty at the same time. Love the longer unedited Whip versions and also Lies faster takes...also Imagination sounds more rocker and punchier

Lately I'm partial to his acoustic blues stuff...

Check out the Keith Plays His Favorites disc from Voodoo Brew - there's "Keith's Boogie," Blues Riffs," "Cocaine Blues," all that stuff really defines Keith and his style for me. Even that youtube clip of Keith playing 32-20 Blues for Buddy Guy on the acoustic - just stellar stuff.

Or that crazy 12 string stuff from "Good Times Bad Times" and "How Many Times". Others might disagree, but I have always thought the Blues and a 12 String guitar don't belong together.

Fantastic as all the electric stuff is, my personal favourite Keith sound has always been the utterly simple but perfect acoustic that's the heart of some of the early songs like Play With Fire, Lady Jane or Backstreet Girl.

I'm like the dog on the record label "his master's voice" I can always pick out Keith's sound in any song. latest obviousness is worried life blues on boogie with stu. there's nobody that sounds like that in this world.
