Chuck Berry!

It's amazing how many people dismiss him these days, even RS fans.

Well, what is underrated anyway. How can a guy like John Frusciante be underrated -he's played in one of the bigest bands of the 90's and 2000's, sold a gazillion albums, earned hundreds of millions of dollars, and is on the top of every guitar magazine readers poll of 'greatest guitarist'.

I would love to be underrated like that.

he's underrated on a very high level! ;-)
i think if you ask a hundred people on the street to name guitarplayers they know, he wouldnt be mentioned to often. (not that this would say anything about his qualities). and he is shurely not a guitar-icon like hendrix, keith, van halen, clapton, bb king, slash, etc.

Re: OT: Top 5 Underrated Guitarists

To get this kind of recognition, your band also needs to be very guitar-based. That's why Flea is the star of the band (with Kiedis), not Frusciante.

I definitely see Frusciante as underrated. I mean - Ron Wood and Taylor played/play in one of the biggest bands ever, and have been on the cover of many mags, but are very underrated IMO.

How about Jeff Buckley?

After looking at the thread, and w/ my previous post I have to say that Richard Lloyd is probably my favorite guitarist from the last many years. I will never forget seeing him in NYC in his drinking years.

He was the founding member of Union Carbide Productions and The Soundtrack of Our Lives. He left both bands when they became famous as he dislikes to tour. Today he works as a song writer and producer for various artists in Sweden.

Here he is with TSOOL. He is the brown haired guy in the beginning of the video.

Interesting that you rate Patterson over Cooley or John Neff for that matter who I think is probably a better guitar player than Cooley and Patterson put together.

Albert Lee.

Keith Urban - although I must say I hate his music; which p*sses me off even more that he's such a good guitar player yet rarely uses the skill. Here's a good example of him with his old band before he hit the big-time as a country pop crooner:

Snowy White.

Saw him with Thin Lizzy in 1981 and he seemed to struggle with the rock guitarist posing a la Scott Gorham (not that there was anything wrong with Scott Gorham's posing) but his playing was faultless.

Impossible to answer.

Making money and being famous is just a part of the circus.
Ive seen many guitarist (and musicians in general) out there playing awesome, with a smile.
They just didn't make it, or didn't even care.

Yeah StonesTod, pure luck that I ever even heard them. We had a radio station that would play entire new albums at midnight. One night I stayed up late and happened to catch them playing this live lp. I just HAD to stay up until the end to scribble the title down. Never heard them on the radio again, never heard them mentioned by any of my musician friends ever in the following decades, don't think I ever read any articles in the music rags about them, and wasn't too keen on their studio stuff. But this album, and this song, wow! I was just really lucky that I happened to catch that one radio station on that one night!
