I;m glad to see Wilson Pickett is a favorite here.

I think he may have been the greatest soul singer ever. He had the power but also was more versitile than people give him credit for.

Sam Cooke is another that I might call the greatest soul singer ever if forced to choose. Difficult for me to decide between those two.

But I'll throw out a couple of other favorite voices (just the sound of their voice) that have not been mentioned.

I was being provocative, Tod. I think there's a case to be made for Mick Jagger as a soul singer, ok, maybe not up there with these greats, but it merits a discussion.

excellent. i look at mick as a jack of all trades (styles), master of none. that's not a criticism....he has an endless supply of vocal personas; some work better than others.

Only a couple of posts mention James Brown?!? Good God! Mother Popcorn Part 1&2.Boston 1968,etc. Godfather of Soul!

No it doesn't. Jagger doesn't belong anywhere on that list. (and I love Mick, but even he'd be the first to tell you he's not worthy to carry Marvin Gaye's socks.)

No idea what you mean by this post but the rudiments of soul are certainly in some of his Atlantic recordings.



No other votes for Bobby Bland?? Surly one of the greatest soul singers ever and a real pioneer of the style.

it's the tag-line on many a big joe recording....

Aretha, Sly, Stevie, Marvin, Curtis, Al Green as soul artists...(in that they wrote and were innovators/created their own sound)

After them, I wouldn't know where to stop: Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Sam Moore, the guy from the Stylistics, the guy from the Spinners, Maurice White, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers etc...and everybody already listed in this thread. The list is endless.
