OT: New Orleans Jazz Fest Artist announced

Everybody should go to this festival at least once in their life. This year looks like another great line up! [www.nojazzfest.com]

I was just about to post this, but was deterred by the thought of the "what's this got to do with jazz or New Orleans heritage" comments that always follow when I post the line-up anywhere. But I agree it's another good bill this year, and definitely a festival well worth going to--one of the more civilized, in that it's only during the day and there's no camping, etc. Plus there are other bands playing around town during the evening. Also, it's a bargain compared to other festivals!

Can't guarantee the weather, though.

Wow, that does look amazing. It's been many years since I've been to NOLA, might be time for another visit. Thanks for the link, fleabitmonkey.

Bruce and Johnny Winter on the same day is a bit tempting! (Of course, what usually happens is that they end up being at the same time, too.)

Look at the full list. There's lots of them. There are whole stages dedicated to them, in fact, plus the blues tent every day, etc.

P.S. Best food of any festival!

If I'm not mistaken, originally the word "Jazz" was catch-all word used by musicologists to define any music that wasn't "classical".

As it came to become a term for a certain type of music, it was referring to a music, in the large part, created in and around New Orleans.

As that music spread out from New Orleans, it has been evolving ever since into hugely diverse styles of music, some no longer even classified under the catch-all of "Jazz".

In my opinion, the hosts of the NO Jazz Festival are well within their rights to invite ANYONE to their Jazz Festival as, they would seem to have a far closer knowledge of what Jazz might be than I ever will. From what I understand, as much as we outsiders consider Jazz to be a definable art-form, many people in NO/LA consider Jazz (in ALL of it's definitions) to be an important part of their cultural roots. Some of these artists may not fit my or your definition of "Jazz" artists but I'd be willing to bet someone from within the community could point out philosophical attributes of Jazz which are contained in each of the artists at the festival that may not be musically obvious to those of outside the community.

Peace,
Mr DJA

It's beyond me how you could possibly read the line up and conclude it's the "usual pop and rock happening". There is nothing usual about this festival. If any city has the right to use the term "Jazz Festival" its The Big Easy.

One of the few things I can actually bake...years ago bought a deep fry just for cooking up some beignets for my daughter to bring into school for a project. Me with a baby on my hip, both of us covered in powdered sugar, cooking oil splattered all over the place...they came out great, but that was the end of my baking career.

I'll take some to go, please.

Sadly, although I usually go I'm having to give it a pass this year. Luckily I'll be catching some of the artists at other places, and the beignets on my next trip to N.O. grinning smiley

Haven't decided if I'm going to any JF days. French Quarter Fest is next weekend. That's always fun.

Bingo! They're playing at the same time.

During every Jazzfest, there are horrible schedule conflicts, where there can be at least two (sometimes even more) things going on at the same time on different stages that I really want to see. A friend once described Jazzfest as "it's not so much about what you saw as it is about what you missed while you were seeing what you saw." However, once I've made a choice, no second guessing allowed! Make a decision based on the best available information and live with it.

Jazzfest is so much more than just the concert at the racetrack, it's a 2 week long party where every day and every turn there is something happenining. There is music in the clubs, on the streets and even in the river.

I was there about 10 years ago and besides the "Jazzfest Concert" I saw the Funky Meters play on a riverboat.

It's an experiance everyone should try to go to.

A friend of mine has vacation time and booked a flight, but can't find a reasonably priced hotel within 35 miles, any suggestions I could pass on to him?

I used to always stay at the Parkview Marigny on Frenchmen Street, just outside the quarter. I'm sure everything is going to be expensive

At this point it will be almost impossible to find reasonably-priced accom during the two Jazz Fest weekends, everywhere has been sold out for months. They're the biggest weekends of the year. But if your friend is prepared to stay somewhere just outside, like Metairie, and drive (though that's a nightmare in itself--might be possible to get a group together and split cab fare), then hotel prices are cheaper. But again, at this point not easy to get. I noticed this year that many of the outlying hotels that used to run shuttle buses to JF have stopped doing it. thumbs down
