There sure were a lot of soft country rock during the 70s, but this list is meant to be a bit rough. Flower power `67-`68? See "psychedelia".

There sure were blues rock at the end of the 60s/ eary 70s, but this is to be found as part of the "roots" and "heavy/prog" label.

^ By country rock, I meant the stuff as done in the late 60s by The Byrds, Dylan and Gram parsons.

Well, you have to see the "roots" label.

Just remembered this little tidbit for 1971: "blood rock" aka "doom/stoner rock"

This version is from 1986.

And here's the original from '71--a top 40 U.S. hit. Those were the days....

You`re right. List is corrected, plus softrock added to mid 70s.

I think the "boy band-pop" should be included in the 90s and 00s, as much as it hurts to say...

And "house" is too easy. r&B (rhythm and beats, not blues), hip hop, world music pop etc. all have been dominating the 90s and 00s. "Rave" or "House" was essentially a late 80s/early-mid 90s thing.

And where is the "brit pop" that was the biggest thing around the world for some years in the mid-late 90s? Should be included.

I agree `bout most of your points. However, I judge the mid-late 90s "brit pop" as stricktly retro (they`re trying to sound like The Beatles, -developing it) When I say "House" it`s an attempt to make things simple. I mean most of the music one will hear at a clup/on the radio since the late 80s up to now.

They tried to sound like the Beatles, the Stones and the Kinks + as themselves smiling smiley

It was surely a retro-phenomenon, but all the same those bands had a tremendous influence with their music, and sold loads of records.

I miss indie.
Is jazzrock too marginal? (not just fusion but also Chicago, BS&T and so on).

and whatabout the Canterbury Scene?????

We're forgetting garage, which would be inserted 1964/65 or so.

Well, "indie" to my knowledge, stands for "individual". I feel arrogance towards the term, and put it in the "retro" bag. Jazzrock becomes a bit marginal. "Canterbury Scene"? -Hmm, smells like retro to me. Garage? Well, in this rough list it will have to live under the "beat/surf" banner. Btw, "house", to me, could be called "disco with a faster pace". It`s not a complement.

I don't imagine we'd give any consideration to Motown in this list?

In the more popular Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago context, we are talking millions and millions of records. Hardly marginal.

How old are you, noughties?

I am 57 years of age. I have a living memory of seeing an LP cover by Blood, Sweat & Tears when I was 13. Besides, I remember the mid 70s as a very boring time in rock music. This list is "painted on memory". It`s an attempt at catching the most significant musical labels associated with each year. Then some has to go. My ambition is to be mainstream.

Sorry if my last answer comes across as a mixed bag. That is how it has to be when one`s answering above posts and delivering independent statments in the same reply.

Motown, Stax????
James Brown introducing Funk, which led to E,W & F and disco? 'Real' Disco was some great sh*t.

The worldwide arrival of Reggae in mid 70s.
And the spread of 'World' music in late 80's.

Should Ska be included in Punk in late 70?

Yes - Country rock from Byrds to Eagles,Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. James Taylor.

Great OP though.

If Britpop belongs in the catch-all "retro" bag then so do all the early 60s groups who began by trying to sound like earlier blues/rock'n'roll/soul but soon arrived at a sound of their own. Much the same thing happened to Oasis, Blur, Pulp etc.

And that should be "boy band /girl band pop" there were just as many girl bands as boys ...
