It's ultimately a matter of taste but Havo I don't think you'll find that many listeners that'll agreed with you. I disagree, Exile is better than the 3 albums you mentionned because it's Exile on Main Street!! Rocks OFF, Tumbling Dice, Happy, All down the line, Sweet Virginia , Rip this joint, Loving cup etc... Very few rock and roll records can beat that.

it depends on what you're saying, which I don't understand. Do you mean all those albums together "top" Exile, or each one separately? And what do you mean by "top"?

Or, if you prefer the three recent albums to Exile, lack thereof.

I prefer Their Satanic Majesties Request over Exile On Main Street. It's imperfect, but really unique. It's like the tv series The Prisoner on an lp. Weird, beautiful, makes sense, doesn't make sense and so on. I love it!

Exile is far too normal for my tastes and the whole hype of it being their greatest album etc etc drove me away from it.

Havo - I like all three albums that you mention. However, they do not come close to Exile on Main Street. To me that is the best album of all time and i find it far from normal even though Hismajesty does not.

perhaps Havo is referring to sales volume?
Do bridges, abb and VL, together, top EXILE in overall sales volume?
perhaps?!

Really? You might have convinced me of Voodoo Lounge, but Bridges? And certainly that can't be true of ABB.

'Exile' wasnt a huge seller in terms of Stones albums. Not on a par with the likes of Some Girls, Tattoo You and Sticky Fingers. Maybe the recent reissue helped, though. Then again, in its vinyl form, the original was a double. I'm sure georgelicks can provide approximate sales figures.

ABB did ok considering it was released in an era when sales are in the toilet due to downloading and file sharing.

When you consider that Exile is almost 40 years old, the last three Stones studio albums fare pretty well by comparison sales-wise.

I think 'Stripped' even sold about 3.5 million. Thats probably comparable to 'Exile' as well.

Edit found the link - [www.iorr.org]

This French site estimates Exile's worldwide sales now as 6.5 million. If thats the case, thats some serious revisionism because a couple of years ago, it was always being talked about as having underperformed. Then again, that might count as double what it really is as it was a double LP.

Voodoo Lounge - 6 million
Stripped - 3.8 million
BTB - 4.5 million
ABB - 2.8 million

No. Havo is just one of these Brian Jones people who think Jumpin' Jack Flash marks the beginning of the Stones decline. Yup, that Havo is sharp, alright. Got a mind like a steel trap. Full of mice.

Fairly respectable numbers overall, particularly VL. Even if Exile is 'double counted', then you would have to extrapolate from the stats that the others are also double-counted, which means we're comparing apples to apples.

With all of that said, I would hazard to guess this isn't what Havo was actually getting at, but it was a nice side street to take a trip down.

The worst song in Exile is better than those three albums put together.

there is no worst song on "EXILE"--but "Aftermath" much better

That might be a very long album so you could be right strictly speaking...however if you took the top 10 songs, from all 3 albums, and held those up against the worst song on EXILE, what would you prefer to have. Those 10 songs, or the one worst one off exile?

ie, Just Wanna See His Face (not saying it's the worst...just for illustrative purposes), vs:

Saint of Me, Back of My Hand, Rough Justice, Thief in the Night, Under the Radar (off the expanded ABcool smiley, Dangerous Beauty, Out of Control, She Saw Me Coming....ok, my mind is becoming blank...what are some other good ones?!

Those three albums put together aren't even better than Steel Wheels.

Why? They're not doubles (well, technically a couple are vinyl doubles but Cd was the format of choice for the lifespan of those later releases and vinyl sales would be negligible). The latter albums compare favourably sales-wise considering Exile had a head start on them of two or three decades.

Of course, 'Exile' didnt have a world tour to promote it. The others did. The 'Voodoo Lounge' tour remains the Stones most successful one (and the most successful by anyone) in real terms.
