What happened to my thread ...
Posted by: bv ()
Date: January 13, 2011 19:32

If your thread is deleted then the reason is it was offending. May be you was spreading a rumour about another person. May be you said something offending about another person. That is unacceptable and against IORR policy.

If I see the same post again then I will delete the access to the person who post. Standard procedure to prevent people from spreading false and offending rumours. And even if they were true, it is still personal and still offending to the individual.

Thanks!

BV A suggestion, once a year have a 24hr period where we can write anything we want music, politics, etc without the fear of being banned into the great unknown.
After that, we go back to the normal..

BV, wouldn't it save more time by creating this post (and your other rules) as a permanent sticky on the top of the board?

How about if people that would like to post rude or offending threads, just control themselves?

The thing with your premise,is that, what someone may consider offensive or rude, someone else may not think the same, here at iorr we have people from all over the world, and sometimes the nuances in the different languages, may mean different things to different people.
Is like someone may a look at picture of a naked woman or man and may think its art while others will call it Pornographic.
So who is to judge?

I say thrash the offenders. Give them a sound thrashing and hopefully they won't do it again. >grinning smiley<

Well, that could also be a solution, maybe bv will start a flogging day,how about 20 lashes with a leather whip? On second thought, some people may actually enjoy thatdrinking smiley.

So who is to judge?

The 'cultural relativism' you point out truely exists here (I have personal experiences of how some of my posts - that I consider to be humorous and funny - have caused some people to feel offended since the posts are delated.)

What goes to the 'someone's art is other's pornography'-problem I think the guiding principle simply is that if anyone is offended by the content, then the material is not suitable and can be delated. So the 'pornography' side is always 'right'. Of course, this shortens up the area and material one is right to do and say but what else principle there can be? It is the 'cost' of having such wide rank audience we have here. The more different we are the more careful we need to be with our words in order not to hurt each other.

The other - simple - principle of guidance would be that the moderator - BV - determines what is "offensive" with more detail but as far as I've seen, he is not willing to do that but instead lets people themselves judge if their hurt feelings are worth of reporting or not. I think the leading idea of his policy is make sure that people do not feel offended here.

Something is weird here. The first Jane Rose thread seemed innocent enough and I KNOW the second one was innocuous as I contributed a cool story to it. My story could only, maybe offend someone with the very thinnest of skin.

The last thread that was deleted from me was totally OT: but not offending.

I just want to discuss outraged videos on YouTube (just to protect our children)

Well, all I can say is that my thread on the musicans most likely to die in 2011 WASN'T deleted, it was just closed because of the nasty responses to it. So, the subject matter, which I thought was mostly funny, didn't offend the moderator, but the responses to it were hostile and over the top. So sometimes maybe it's the offendee's who are to blame for some it.

Some people report probably just to shut a thread, but I'll admit that I myself have never ever reported any thread. The way I see it, if you don't like it, don't participate. If offended by someone, ignore or respond. Simple as that.

But you can see the squealers that often arrive at the beginning with the thread closure threats, countdowns, and other winey complaints.

It would be nice if wikileaks provided the list of "secret" reporters, you would probably be amazed at a select few that are on it.

Remember, there are probably a lot of younger kids on here masquerading as adults and looking to incite vitriol and others goading with semi-political and religious taunts. But that is the nature of the web. BV does need to derail these things occasionally because it does lead to some issues. It is his forum and with that comes the power of the veto pen.

It was closed because it was in extremely poor taste and should have never been satrted in the first place.(no I didn't report it). Their is nothing funny about people dying. How would you like to see your name on a list of people likely to die? Would that amuse you?

I am pretty much on record as being against the hair-trigger approach to closing threads that appears to operate on this board, but you were asking for trouble posting a thread like that.
