be prepared (you may be outside putting up the plywood as I type).

Not good, if you are one of those kind; not great but OK if you don't mind and, of course, for the kind that like it, fantastic!
It will be fun. IF it stays on the track they have for now.

Storm surge is looking to be about 11 feet in my neck of the bayou. That changes some things. At least the storm won't blow up into a 3 or higher due to dry air on the western part of it. If it stays as it is anyway. Isaac should stay a cat 1, maybe a weak 2.

A well-maintained car and a tank full of gas is my only preparation.

We're still getting minor squalls and high winds here in S. Florida. The system seems to be moving on. I saw the Mayor of N.O. this morning via NBC say that the SuperDome or facilities will not be available this time for Lousiana residents. I'm not making this up.

On CNN they just said they prepared buses to drive people out of the city and that they could use the Superdome if they need to.
They also showed ths huge " wall " a barrier they built after KatrinaQuote

Last week, when the forecast was for Isaac to travel up through Mississippi, I reserved a hotel room in Alexandria, Louisiana.
I thought northwest was the way to go, but now Isaac is traveling northwest, as well.
Oh well, at least I will be above sea level when it hits.

Hurricanes can still pack a punch after they move onto land.
It's not unusual to see stong winds & tornadoes cause damage for many, many miles after landfall.

Your probably right, but I remember Hurricane Charley in 2004, it went from a Cat 2 to a Cat 4 (145 MPH) in about an hour or two. It was expected to hit Tampa or a little farther to the north and all of a sudden made a right hand turn (didn't use its blinkers) and came in a 75-100 miles south in around Sanibel/Captiva Island's into Port Charlotte area. It was a small storm but a lot a damage to a 10-15 mile path as it moved in land.
Moral of the story - expect the unexpected.
BTW - didn't the Stones do a photo shoot on Sanibel Island for the Black & Blue album in 1976?

When the city calls for an evacuation, and I expect that to happen around noon, I start loading the car up.
It seems like damn near everybody who evacuates jumps on the Interstate to get out of town, and turns the highway into a parking lot.
I'll be taking back roads all the way.

They never wanted it to be. With Katrina and everyone being so inept (like not using all available buses, not helping people get out that don't have vehicles etc) while knowing full well that people needed help, the Supe was, as they say, a shelter of the last resort. There are less people now, not that that really matters, and just about everyone is aware and knows they're on their own.
