40 Licks out of print - why?
Posted by: Send It To me ()
Date: November 29, 2010 16:37

It's a shame that Don't Stop / Keys / Stealing / Touch can no longer be found. I like those four tracks a lot.

Anyone know why it's out of print?

Anyone know how many copies it sold?

Because...it had four new songs on it that weren't hits? Because they're aren't "moving forward" anymore?

I dunno. You'll have to ask someone at UMe why they haven't reissued it. They bothered with Jump Back, which is essentially disc 2 of Forty Licks, right, and there's no point in reissuing disc 1 of Forty Licks since those tracks are available on Big Hits 1 and 2 and Hot Rocks and Rolled Gold and all the loads of others...

I've always found it funny that Virgin decided to reissue Made In The Shade and Sucking In The Seventies (and Jump Back in the States) right before the contract was up. I'm glad they did because I got Shade and Sucking but how strange...

Right now, to get the same songs which were on 40 Licks you need the more expensive, by $10, Hot Rocks PLUS Made in The Shade, Jump Back and the other RS Records era comps.Nuff said.

And why No Security too?

Actually, to have what is on Forty Licks aside from the four songs you need:

Big Hits 1 (or Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks)
Big Hits 2 (or Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks)
Made In The Shade (or Exile for Happy)
Sucking In The Seventies (or Some Girls for Shattered)
Dirty Work
Jump Back (which doesn't have Happy on it!)
Voodoo Lounge
Bridges To Babylon

The contractual agreement that Virgin/Promopub B.V. and ABCKO obviously included that distribution of "Forty Licks" were to shift from Virgin to ABKCO at some point, which it did. Since ABKCO ran the album's distribution shortly before it was discontinued, Promopub B.V.'s new distributor UMG maybe did not agree with ABKCO continuing to distribute "their" half of "Forty Licks", so ABKCO would have had to discontinue it.

That's an utterly strange scenario since ABKCO are being distributed by UMG as well.

It's sad that the Rolling Stones best compilation album (and probably the best compilation album by any band out there) is out of print.

OK but getting back to the point, do they really need to reissue Forty Licks? It was just a extra money grabber because of the tour they were doing - the same reason Made In The Shade came out - an excuse to make some money. And of course some kind of way to mark forty years.

Since the Stones haven't done anything since signing up with UMe other than seemingly checked off a yes or a no for what got brickwalled and reissued, there's been no reason to reissue anything that is redundant at this point (although why ABKCO did is still amazing!). Jump Back is the new Rewind and is very close to what's on disc 2 of Forty Licks in terms of the songs that matter.

UMG or UMe is planning their own greatest hits? Ha ha. I really doubt that!!!

And really, if UMe was to reissue Forty Licks certainly they'd improve the second disc by replacing the 4 new tracks with some better tracks. Heartbreaker, Happy, She's So Cold and Hang Fire are some that I would replace them with.

Doubt what you want, it´s in their deal with the Stones anyway.

It is eh? What are they waiting for then? Seems like they would have already done it!

It's easy to doubt since they've really dropped the ball with what all they've done. And they thought Virgin was not doing anything. SHEESH.

Don't Stop is pretty good, but I didn't think it was possible to like those other 3 tracks.

I believe you're right but I want to know if it's going to be a 1CD compilation or a 2CD compilation

Except for Forty Licks and No Security, Rarities and Sucking In the Seventies are also out of print. These two also contains tracks not available on any other album right now.

If the Stones wanted to be really almost current they could put all 50 on one disc...as mp3s.

UMG is planning their own Greatest Hits.

I heard about this too, they want a SINGLE album with about 20 of their most well known tracks and with a low price at retail, something like this:

(All their tracks with over 1 billion US audience airplay, 19 so far)

Satisfaction
Get Off Of My Cloud
Paint It Black
Under My Thumb
Let's Spend The Night Together
Ruby Tuesday
She's a Rainbow
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Sympathy For The Devil
Honky Tonk Women
Gimme Shelter
YCAGWYW
Brown Sugar
Wild Horses
Angie
IORR
Miss You
Beast Of Burden
Start Me Up

I also like these cuts. Especially Stealing My Heart which become the one I played the most of both CDs

What an annoying repackage...if this is all they're going to have to offer.

If they really made another hits compilation (And I believe Ville if he says so), I'd prefer it to be over 2 discs with one song from each album and the rest filled out ith single hits. Also, keep it entirely up to date by adding a track from a new CD, if they release such a thing.

If another hits package is planned they might put it out to tour behind if new material is not forthcoming.

For all it's short comings 40 Licks was, I believe, the first Stones album in the UK to sell a million copies.
