Somebody out there must know this....

Which song have the Stones performed live the most? How many times have they played it? Got to be JJF, hasn't it.....?

Maybe that one...or Satisfaction.

1. Jumpin' Jack Flash - 1,020
2. Brown Sugar - 997
3. Honky Tonk Women - 967
4. Satisfaction - 954
5. Tumbling Dice - 951
6. Start Me Up - 742
7. Sympathy for the Devil - 719
8. IORR - 693
9. YCAGWYW - 615
10. Miss You - 599

(give or take 2 or 3 performances)

Total shows : 2,057 or thereabouts, but bear in mind the 1,000th show took place as long ago as 1967 and the 2,000th was in August 2006.

Geez, when Keith says they were constantly on the road, he wasn't lying. I knew JJF was no1 but I thought Tumbling Dice would be higher as they didn't play Satisfaction alot for like 10 years but when you see that crazy stat about the shows it's understandable. In fact, it seems strange that more of the stalwarts from that era aren't higher up!

They didnt do that many shows in the 70s (barely 250), so whilst Satisfaction was played less than ten times in that decade, it wasnt omitted from THAT many shows when you factor it into a 50-year career.

Apart from '72 when HTW was hardly played at all, the other 5 songs in the top 6 have been almost ever present in the set since they were debuted.

Wow! thanks. Can't believe they did 1,000 shoes in their first 5 years together. Wonder how many of these will be trotted out again if they tour next year...?

Outstanding compilation. Thanks for this achievment. Just by curiosity, what is the score of Gimme Shelter.

Gazza, looks like there needs to be a thread devoted to this kind of info. I know you've posted that kind of thing here and there before but I certainly can't remember what threads or if there is indeed one devoted to such info. Maybe one could be made under Track Talk: Tracks Performed Live (as an example) or maybe BV could make it a sticky.

It would be hilarious too. Certainly there is some kind of Top 20 for songs played the most live...

Dont know, off the top of my head. Someone previously asked what the figures were for the most performed songs and I just checked out what would be the top 12 or so candidates. Didnt look for 'Gimme Shelter' as it would be nowhere near that amount.

After a quick run through the tour lists, it would be in the region of about 430. Half of which were in 1989-90 and 1997-98.

JJF, absolutely.
JJF has been performed at almost every Stones concert since the first time it was played live at NME in May of 1968.
The exceptions to this are few.

Re: most performed song live

JJF was omitted from the set at the theatre show at the Enmore, Sydney in February 2003.

I think that was the first full length gig they'd performed since it was recorded 35 years earlier in which they hadnt played it.

Then again, it was also the only Stones show ever which opened with 'Midnight Rambler', which must have more than made up for it...

SMU 742 shows - all in all 2057 shows. Difference 1315. 1000 shows in 1967. Then between 1967 and 1981 (14 years) they only did about 300 shows or 20-25 shows pr. year. A huge drop compared to the first 5 years. So Keith had lots of time to relax btw 1967 and 1981.

Note that:

1. Jumpin' Jack Flash - 1,020 Original Stones
2. Brown Sugar - 997 Second Stones
3. Honky Tonk Women - 967 Original Stones
4. Satisfaction - 954 Original Stones
5. Tumbling Dice - 951 Second Stones
6. Start Me Up - 742 Third Stones
7. Sympathy for the Devil - 719 Original Stones
8. IORR - 693 Second Stones
9. YCAGWYW - 615 Original Stones
10. Miss You - 599 Third Stones

Nice to see that 50 % of the top ten live numbers is from the original Stones era.

Honky Tonk Women isn't - as it features Taylor, and not Jones.

The only song of that top 10 that was ever performed at a full length show that featured Brian Jones is 'Satisfaction'.

To break the number of gigs down further

Stones Mk I (with Jones, and including Stu and the various musicians who preceded Bill & Charlie in the band) (1962-68) - 1,014 shows

Stones Mk II (with Taylor) - (1969-73) - 172 shows

Stones Mk III (with Woody) - (1975-90) - 321 shows

Stones Mk IV (without Bill) - (1994 to date) - 550 shows

The band's busiest years in terms of number of gigs played :

1964 - 322
1963 - 296
1965 - 241
1966 - 85
2003 - 81
1995 - 74

You see the same trend with most bands, the older stuff / the first hits weigh the most in the set-list. Take f.eks. Macca's setlist from this year. About 2/3 of the songs are from the Beatles era.

Gazza answers the question accurately...but you should also consider that the score is a function of recency i.e. YCAGWY is >10 years older than SMU and has therefore had more opportunities to be played live, but the younger song has been played many more times. From my perspective I have been lucky to see them 46 times (between 1990 and 2007) and only 2 songs have been played at each show: BS and TD. So, not all war horses are equal

OMG, I sound like such an a*se

An interesting take on these songs would be the % of shows played after they were released--Start Me Up might be equal to, or surpass JJF. You Got Me Rockin' would (unfortunately) also be near the top of that list!

That's just amazing Gazza. All the real big hits also come from those early Jones years, Paint it Black, She's a Rainbow etc, They made from 1964 to 1968 with Jones 7 studio albums (UK, that's almost 2 brand new studio albums per year). The amazing thing is they worked so immensely hard, but only 20 yrs later from the Steel Wheel tour onwards they really started reaping the fruits of that hard work. You reap what you saw, but it takes time for the fruits to ripen, it's a creational law.
