Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

The album that made me re-think Rod Stewart all together considering I didn't think much of him in my early 20's while he was beginning to release his Songbook collections...

Check out his singing with the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group....great stuff.

Oh yeah--have all the Faces albums. But I hadn't gone into The Faces yet when I picked up "Every Picture."

Always a difficult choice.....

1. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
2. Otis Blue - Otis Redding
3. Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
4. Exile - not sure who that's by.......
5. A Love Supreme - John Coltrane
6. All Mod Cons - The Jam
7. Sgt Pepper - Beatles
8. (What's the Story) Morning Glory - Oasis
9. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
10. Bitches Brew - Miles Davis

As always with these lists they are always subjective. My choices change every week and so several of them are interchangable, some are constant.

Oh, these lists worry me. I tried and, as usual, couldn't so I decided on a few rules: 1) no Stones album (because obviously they'd be there) 2) no album already mentioned (so no Libertines, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Beatles, Stone Roses, Pulp...) 3) studio albums only

and came up with, in alphabetical order:

Air - Moon Safari
Keren Ann - La Disparition
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
David Bowie - Low
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin - Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg
Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!
The Smiths - Queen is Dead
Tyrannosaurus Rex - Unicorn
The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues

In a couple of hours I'm going to be horrified that I missed X, Y and Z. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Teatro - Willie Nelson

Surprised by that choice, Koen. I'm a HUGE Willie fan myself. Don't remember picking that one up but I do know the track "My Own Particular Way" and was bothered a bit by the production. I shall have to pick it up.

I only have two of his albums, Teatro, and Redheaded Stranger. I only play Teatro - and love the songs and production by Daniel Lanois.

No order apart from Exile at no 1

Exile-Stones
Kind of Blue-Miles Davis
Crosby Stills and Nash self titled
Queen 2-Queen
Blue-Joni Mitchell
Notorious Byrds Brothers-The Byrds
Aja-Steely Dan
Anodyne-Uncle Tupelo
The Dreaming-Kate Bush
Appetite For Destruction-Guns and Roses

Honourable exceptions- After the goldrush,Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,Houses of the Holy etc,etc

some fantastic choices - love queen 2 Its hard to pick a best Kate Bush. The Dreaming is her "tonights the night" (Neil Young) - if such a thing were possible. But it is unique and creepy. Mysterious and fatalistic. By contrast Kates first album is drippy and dreamy - but it haunts me still!

Yep,it's hard to pick a Kate album,i even love Aerial which gets quite a rough ride.Even the weakest one,Lionheart has Wow on in which is such a beautiful song.I actually think she is a genius and there aren't many of those in rock/pop.

Got to say, when i watch people flock to see We Will Rock you i often wonder how many of them have heard or even heard of Queens 1 or2 and what they'd think of them if they did.I mean Ogre Battle for instance is as far away from Crazy Little Thing Called Love as you can get. A bit elitist of me i know but what the hell and i suppose it's their versatility and capacity to change that kept them ahead of the game.

That album sums up my first year of college for me. An album which is what they call a "game-changer."

Justin, Is This It? changed my life: it is the record that defines my late-teens. It is the record that made me asses who I am and how I want to look. Things were never the same again after hearing that record and viewing the Last Nite video.
