forget it !
I suppose you're English, so, it's totally useless to talk with someone who despises everything which is not english spoken or sung, which in itself shows a real lack of open-mindedness.

Not at all - I love Gong. I just don't think that the French have ever produced any Rock music of any note. It's not an attack on the French as a nation, I would love to be proved wrong!

All this fuzz sounds like a storm in a teacup to me.
It's quite normal for "Rock icons" like the Rolling Stones, to be mentioned as representative for this and that. We all know that Rock stardom works by the way of gross simplification. And people like Keith, feeding the myth, even enhance that.

So it's no wonder that people refer to the Stones as symbols, hoping that everybody will immediatly catch what they hint at. What they now seem to stand for is sadly just a sign for many peoples perception of the Stones, I guess.

But who really cares? I'm sure Keith doesn't. And I don't think this little side blow from Depardieu gives any reason to bash the man. I'd really wish we'd have more great actors like him acting (and probably also living) purely by instinct - which somehow makes him a fellow of our beloved Keith!

In any case, GD is a disgusting lout, who, if there were any justice in this world, would have been escorted off the plane, arrested, and banned from flying on any airline.

He's a dick...all about self promotion, his latest antic being to piss in the aisle on a flight. Has been in a few decent film and a hell of a lot of crap as well. Anyway what do the french know about Rock and Roll, last French rock band I can remember was Plastic Bertrand and that was a punk outfit!!! Sorry Sway winking smiley
Where do you come from Monsieur je sais tout. What do you know about Frenchies or France. First: Plastic Bertrand is a belgium and if you have a litte bit of knowing, they speak in french in half of Belgium>. Second: Perhaps France is not the country of great rock'n'roll bands but we can love that and know about this music more than you can imagine. Third: Depardieu is a great actor and did a lot of movies. It's a poor guy now all these pranks. This is not self promotion. He doesn't need that. He is known all around the world. Talk about us, the french people, I'm laughing!

But, please remind me which french rock bands there are that we might have heard of?

French music is very divers, but most is in French, and therefore not very well known outside the francophone world. But if you are really interested, check this out: [www.frenchmusicblog.com]

It just seems strange that Germany produced excellent rock bands, as did Holland...I am curious as to why France didn't. English and American bands who have toured there get massive crowds and record sales, you would naturally assume that people would be inspired to try and do something similar in france. Maybe the hurdy gurdy is to blame! I'm sure it's not due to the language issue.

For all the evident failure of the French to come up with exceptional rock performers or bands, they do have one genre of popular music which is excellent, the chanson française. There is a long tradition of this, and the best way to describe it is poetry set to music.

Honestly, I don't know NOTHING about French rock scene, but what I do know that the French are the last to make compromises with the language or whatever cultural things to not lose their identity, and that's what they are famous for here in Europe. The last true mohicaans smiling smiley The rest of us just try to be 'international' for any cost, and to ape the anglo-american popular culture, and things like that, if one wants to get international recognition (well, not really, but The French seem to be the most self-dependent in cultural terms). I suppose some of this is to do with French rock scene as well. Besides, having international success - whatever it is: a hit record in USA? or you your photo in the cover of NME? - does no mean a shit if a great art is concerned. There are lots of great rocks bands or whatever bands all over of the Europe (and I guess all around the world) that mostly are digged by local audiences and by their local language. And what is the criteria of significance or greatness? For example, here in Finland there are local rock bands that sing in Finnish that sell much more than The Stones or The Beatles ever done in this market. And they mean more here than those two 'international' bands.

Is Germany more significant than France since they have...what.. The Scorpions,,, Jesus Christ...eye popping smiley

Well...wow, what to say in response to this old thread...Anderson Cooper was brought to tears yesterday by GD pissing on that plane. And in January 1964, the French audiences went crazy for, who was it? Cilla Black???, instead of this other group of louts from provincial Liverpool. Yeah, those French. They at least have their opinions.

Crumbling, check out this album and other work by Serge Gainsbourg. It's an incredible album.

Here's another great song and video - this time Serge with Brigitte Bardot doing Bonnie and Clyde. You can't say that the French don't have style.

Lol...I do like Serge and this is what the french do best (in my humble opinion) but it ain't rock n roll! Sexy as hell though, now this is something us brits and the americans just could never do!

I went back to the original message, and he actually didn't say that much negative. I find it interesting that based on that people here have such strong opinions about him.

Do you know the french band called "telephone". I think yes because they played as first part in Paris for the rolling stones in 1982 and they weren't at the start of the afternoon but just before the stones. Thorogood and J. Geils Band played just before them. They made an excellent rock'n'roll. They jammed too with the stones in 1977 during the some girls sessions in paris. About language, French is spoken in some various part of the world and people think this is not necessary to learn a excellent english to be understand if they need. Countries like Germany, Holland or North countries need to learn very soon a good english to practice it as soon as possible. Except in their lands nobody speak their language. In the USA, some latinos don't speak english and they live in a english state language. In Paris, chinese people live together as a community in the same neighborhood and they don't speak french, they don't need it. Back to Telephone band, they sung rock and roll in french and it was perfect.

Anyone who lives in a foreign country SHOULD learn the language of that country

For Crumbling Mice :
Apart from this parenthèse,aprilfool is right;the band called Téléphone made a very good job and still nowdays their guitarist, Louis Bertignac performs and plays his guitar;
in France back in the 80's ,we had very good nad famous French rock bands ;I think I posted some videos a few months ago

The only thing I could agree with you is that to my ears,French langage doesn't really fit to rock and roll, only English does

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Best and most impressive beginning of a show that I have ever seen.
It's like Jesus descending from heaven.
How the audience go crazy, totally wonderful.
When you are a bit impatient, just go to 1.50.

BTW, the rest of the show is very good too. When a guy is so immense popular in his own country, he must be good. And yes, I do consider Johnny Hallyday as Rock 'n Roll.

If it wasn't coming from you, Rolling Hansie,I could have written :
" When a guy is so immense popular in his own country, does it mean the audience had such a poor taste ? "

PS : I saw once Halliday on live, I must say the man had a voice and a presence on stage but he's not my cup of tea

One of my all-time favourite films, which maybe not so coincidentally reprised the theme of 'Performance', co-starred Johnny Hallyday: 'L'homme du Train' ('The Man on the Train').

He was fantastic.
