Bill Wyman's Monkey Grip

Any thoughts about this record? I know a lot of Stones fans see this as more of a joke, but I think it's kind of underrated in a way; if you take it for what it is..

Is it Ry Cooder playing on this? Surely sounds like him..

Found it in a used record bin, paid less than a dollar for it, played it maybe twice, and it's been gathering dust ever since.

I have a soft spot for this. He's not a great singer, but it has some very strong session players, and it has a cozy, laid back groove. I'd rather listen to it than Ronnie's 1 2 3 4, any day.

I bought this when it first came out. I agree that it is underrated. I actually like it quite a bit.

And it is a lot better than the second album 'Stone Alone'. The songs here are pretty good; plus he has great musicians playing. He was very friendly with the Manassas crew, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, also Kortchmar, L Russell, Dr John, Joe Walsh among others.
The weakest part of the album is the singing. With better vocals they could have taken off a bit more.
On this album he doesn't ruin every song with those BU vocals yet.

I too have a soft spot in my heart for this album...Its his very best release. But sadly Bill's singing in this album and all
his other releases really bring down each track. Brings it down to the point that you really can't listen
to it for more then 1 linten.

Get someone else to sing and you have some great stuff on Monkey Grip!

Bill can write, play Bass but sure can't sing!!!

He sounds like he's bored. Unfortunately, that's contagious...

It's fun how Keith got furious when Jagger released She's The Boss, but didn't give a damn about Wyman releasing this one almost 10 years earlier..

it was more than 10 years earlier and the former threatened the stones' existence; the latter was no threat...just a mere dalliance in solo waters..

One of the top five Stones solo songs:

All of Wyman's solo material sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a 70s sitcom. I bought all of his material once, then immediately sold them.

As an American it seems very quirky, very English. I don't remember hearing any of this in the States. I doubt he even came here to promote it. It's vaguely Nilsson like, or clunky Ringo solo stuff. So Bill can't sing lead for crap. Okay. He's still a fantastically gifted bass player.

I don't know if he physically travelled to the US at the time but he certainly promoted it in the music rags of the day (Rolling Stone, Creem, Circus), and there were full-page ads (maybe someone can post the image: it was a woman's hand holding a banana).

The original vinyl had a special label:

I did not realize the first single (or at least the UK promo) recycled a Stones sleeve:

Thanks. Yeah, I remember there being a standup with the monkey in my local head/record shop, but I wasn't going to plunk down my $6.99 or whatever it was back then on it.

i actually own Bill's Green Ice soundtrack LP - it has some nice numbers on it, and a very different & odd mix of Je Suis Un Rock Star.
