Read somewhere that Rocks Off never got airplay in the UK until today.

I believe that BBC DJ Tony Blackburn commented that "Honky Tonk Woman" was vulgar when it came out.

Some Girls and Claudine
Sweet NeoCon was too cryptic to be taken at face value and let's face it, nobody is looking to the Stones music for political edge, unfortunately, IMO. After Undercover, Jagger's lyrics became less edgy. I remember that song being somewhat "controversial" in England.

I was a teenager when Sympathy came out. That created a LOT of contoversy. Are u kidding me...a song about sympathy for the devil and killing the Kennedy's. My parents thought the Stones were the devils.

Indian Girl.

It's definately the most misunderstood song among fans, that's for sure. Too bad, if more people got it,, they would have realized how complex and prescient it really was. Its like a more subtle version of "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Their WORST song

Vudicus - Zappa was not my cup of tea at all. DOn't like him. But I agree with you he was quite talented.

As for the topic:
Star Star
@#$%& Blues
Some Girls
Street Fighting Man
Satisfaction
Sweet Neo-Con

Remember the songs in the context of the time they were released in. Street Fighting Man certainly would have been a top 5 hit maybe even number 1 song except for the time it came out it was actually seen as subversive. Some of the songs seem tame now but remember the times and the social attitudes of the times.

C o c k s u c k e r Blues...the title says it all.

Probably their most controversial released track would be either Star Star or Some Girls.

Star Star because of the chorus and the name dropping of Steve McQueen and John Wayne... there were fears of lawsuits, that never happened.
Some Girls caused a stir with "black girls just wanna get f... all night, I just don't have that much jam" The American politician Jessie Jackson threw a hissy fit, and it was quite a media story for a while.

Sweet Neo Con also caused a stir during a time in US history when most Americans do not want to look in the mirror and see their own political complexions.

Agreed...also the original Some Girls album cover caused somewhat of a stir as it was recalled and redone!

Keith commented about STAR STAR to Nick Kent:

NICK KENT: "So how are relations currently with Atlantic records?"

KEITH RICHARDS: "Uh comfortable, y'know. They've tried to balls about a bit with this latest album. They've given us a lot of trouble over `Starfcuker' for all the wrong reasons—I mean, they even got down to saying that Steve McQueen would pass an injunction against the song because of the line about him and of course he okayed it. It was just a hustle, though. Obstacles put in our way."

I remember a 90s rapper complaining that The Stones didn't have to have an advisory sticker or their album, citing that particular track.

Hard for a song to be 'controversial' if they never release it.

I wouldnt count any song in the last 30 years or so as the Stones arent exactly 'cutting edge'. I mean, whilst 'Sparks will fly' alluded to anal sex, its not as if anyone cared. Or noticed.

Lets Spend The Night Together, StarfĂșcker, Some Girls, Satisfaction, Street Fighting Man.

It somewhat helps if the song is a single.

Didn't Street Fightin' Man and Highwire get banned ....

Street Fighting man was banned in the US (hence the poor chart position). Not the UK, as far as I know.

It was the other way around for High Wire, I think.

Whilst the song wasnt strictly banned in the UK, there were a list of songs during the Gulf War which were included in a BBC directive not to be played on the radio due to sensitivities. These included somewhat obvious selections such as 'Rock The Casbah' by The Clash, but also extremely tenuous ones ('In The Air Tonight' by Phil Collins, for goodness sake).

That's as bad as The Cult's Fire Woman being banned from NYC radio stations after 9/11!

Highwire - at least in the US the comment on the Gulf War wasn't overly popular - some people are too sensitive

Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb were controversial around when Aftermath was released due to their allegedly sexist lyrical content. Never mind that they were on the same album as Lady Jane.

Banned by who? The Chinese gov't banned 4 songs from 40 LICKS which they subsequently could not play when they eventually performed there.

Several videos were banned, and a sloppy edit of "She's So Cold" had to be released to radio stations (the label said something like "Goddamn-less version").

close...if memory serves it was 'clean version'.

'Get Off My Cloud' was 'rumoured' to by about a 'marijuana dream', whatever the hell that is.

Family

Here comes the girl, she's got her head screwed on
But it ain't screwed on right
Her ambition is to be a prostitute
But the breaks just weren't right
What exactly's gonna happen, tell me
When her father finds out
That his virgin daughter has bordello dreams
And that he's the one she wants to try out
yeah
