Here comes the girl, she's got her head screwed on
But it ain't screwed on right
Her ambition is to be a prostitute
But the breaks just weren't right
What exactly's gonna happen, tell me
When her father finds out
That his virgin daughter has bordello dreams
And that he's the one she wants to try out
yeah

A bit Bill Wymanish for my tastes.

there were Stones-album-burning events in some locales in the 60s

And Beatles too! But you have to remember, those were pretty darn cold winters back then!

The MOST controversial? Depends on the era.

"Satisfaction" from Lineup 1.

"Star Star" from Lineup 2.

"Some Girls" from Lineup 3.

Honorable Mentions: "Paint It, Black", "Stray Cat Blues", "Street Fighting Man",
"Sympathy for the Devil", "@#$%& Blues" ( unofficial; doesn't truly count )

Overall, "Star Star" for reasons already posted.

Let's don't forget "Memo From Turner".

CS blues was once released officially - on a German compilation album - withdrawn once the 'mistake' was realised and then re-released without it....[en.wikipedia.org] ....scroll down to SONG

"Brown Sugar" could have been very controversial, if more people had been able to understand the lyrics. Even Jagger admitted the lyrics were awful (as in offensive, not inept).

But I'd have to go w/ "Some Girls" - having Jesse Jackson organize protests about one's song is pretty bad.

Isn't it strange though - Jagger doesn't seem the least bit prejudiced against black people and yet several of his songs are quite racially insensitive.

racially insensitive? how so? I think he just writes whats going on. the line in Some Girls is humor, like the rest of the song ( and most of the album)

not sure why Brown Sugar would be considered controversial. maybe if he sang "brown sugar, how come you taste so bad?".

Yeah, but only about 17 people bought Metamorphosis, so that doesnt count. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

They could have put a song on that record called 'The Pope is a Poof' and no one would have noticed.

"I bet your mama was a tent show queen" - whore

"Hear him whip the women..." Sexualizing violence against women, the whole song actually is a kind of fetish-glorification of slavery and prostitution.

I do absolutely love the song, don't get me wrong. I was singing it for years (mumbling over the bits I didn't catch); when I finally read a lyric sheet my jaw dropped a bit.

Still 'n all, I know they don't mean no harm. Hell, if I can forgive them for the "Black & Blue" ad campaign,..

I've never heard that expression used outside of that lyric in my life. And never knew what it meant until now.

Anyone else?

Robert Christgau's take: "Jagger links his own music to the slave trade, exploits the racial and sexual contradictions of his stance even as it explores them."

Someone on Huffington Post, "Did the Rolling Stones sing about slave rape?"

Well I would think "hear him whip the women" would be more controversial.

Yes... The tent show Queen would have been the Madame or Star of a brothel of black girls......the boyfriends of "bet all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen" would have been the white young sons of plantation owners/well-to-do white folk who would be taken along by their fathers to lose their virginity.............not being from Louisiana I only have this as hearsay.............but sounds feasible to me..............
Personally I read Brown sugar as an expose of how things were (maybe still are in the deepest darkest south for all anyone knows) rather than any sort of racist or glorifying sexual violence against women type of thing......and the "how come you taste so good" line...I read that as Mick saying of blackgirls "how come you're so beautiful, how come you're so fine, how come you taste so good ?"...........that's a compliment..........

Only if he's glorifying or condoning it. Like Eddie, I dont hear any of that in the song. Surely the song is a 'tribute' if anything

Paint It Black was never supposed to have a comma in the title, and it was removed quickly after someone noticed it on the first pressings.

"sweet neo con"- it´s not that great as a song, but it´s really interesting to hear Mick ranting about right wing hypocrites...I like the lyrics, but once you heard the song once or twice, it ..it´s boring.

Right, there were all kinds of tent shows - religious revivals, musical revues, vaudeville, etc. As Eddie explained so well, there were also tent shows on the fringe of state and county fairs in the rural deep South that were brothels. If you've ever seen the tv movie "Ode to Billie Joe" there's a pivotal scene where a group of young boys (including Billie Joe, who has doubts about his sexual orientation) gets drunk and visits the women in the tents to rid themselves of their virginity. It was a rite of passage. "And all her boyfriends are sweet 16," refers to all the young fellers who come around those tents.

That surely could have been edited out of the final release...it's not like they only had 9 songs and desperately needed a 10th.

It wouldn't have made the cut for Dirty Work.

EVEN THOUGH I could identify with the disdain in the lyrics, this was just a plain bad song.

I think they used that song on the album - to be contoversial, it gave the press something to talk about " next album will have a song about president Bush" - I think the song is there as publicity stunt - "hey, Mick is bashing the president, is that right or wrong ?" - I love the lyrics, but as a song, - it´s all about lyrics and not about melody, etc..
