(1) Tattoo You - Some Girls
(2) Black & Blue

...the Holy Threesome...

Then Goats Head Soup, IORR, Emotional Rescue, Voodoo Lounge & Bigger Bang.
Never cared much for Diry Work, Undercover, nor Steelwheels.
Bridges to Babylon is [ùµ=ùmµ^$^µ%] to me.

I think every review i have read staring in the 80's, has stated "this is their best work since Exile," though time usually shows otherwise. It is ironic since the Exile reviews werent so great in the beginning.

Goats Head Soup and Some Girls

Goat's Head Soup still has some of the original energy of the group. So I pick that

IORR is pretty decent if not totally distinctive

Black and Blue is also good. A little less generic then the LP before but it does have some middling moments.

Some Girls may be tighter then any other post Exile LP, it pretty fun but I don't think it's better song by songs then the three that came before. As a whole it's better though.

Emotional Rescue is ok but yes the first Stones album that doesn't mean much

Tatoo You is the last one I really enjoy. It's not a classic exactly but there's enough good stuff there to make it a fun play. It's also the last where Keith could sing half decently.

Undercover is too modern in the worst way. Maybe three decent songs but none are favorites.

Dirty Work is about as good a Jagger's first two solo LP's. That means it stinks.

Steel Wheels was ok compared to the last two but it was way too slick. Even the better songs just aren't earthy enough.

Voodoo is alright. It like Steel Wheels sounded better at the time. It is better then they had doen in a while though as it has more of a natural sound.

B2B is one of my least favorites. It's as bad as the mid 80's stuff to me. One or two good things

Bigger Bang isn't a classic but if I had to pick one post Tatoo You LP to play it would be this one. Not everything works but they seem to have rediscovered melody. Nicely unmodern.

Some Girls.

After that there are several really strong albums: GHS, IORR, B&B, & Voodoo.

Some Girls is the most coherent album, and hangs together with an overall sound, and captures a time and place with the band.

Pare 3 tracks off Steel Wheels and you've got a damn fine record.

I think their most inventive album ie taking some chances, doing something DIFFERENt, was Undercover.

Some Girls is an obvious choice. I don't think Tattoo You fits in so well since it wasn't a newly recorded album.

I'd give a nod to Emotional Rescue but to say it's the best since Exile? I dunno. It's pretty consistent production and sound wise but it's a bit odd.

I'll go with Undercover followed very close with Some Girls, sort of a 1 and 1A.

very true what you say about undercover and emotional rescue.
